I live in Redditch England which at one time was the major manufacturing town in the world for sewing needles and fish hooks. The process was done in many stages, partly in sheds at peoples homes, and partly in factories. The final stage was grinding and polishing. Grinders were well paid but had a short life span due to inhaling the dust.
More recently they switched to medical needles and my mother-in-law worked at the last factory left here that made them. She worked in a ‘clean’ room, packing by hand the very fine needles used by ophthalmic surgeons.
