Teach Me about Sump Basins

If it’s going off that often I would get a secondary sump pump installed (hole and everything). If you have good monitoring/flood detectors, etc, you might get at it to replace it in time if it burns out, but what if you go on vacation? Your basement will flood badly in no time.

Also consider battery back up sump pump.

When power goes out during that really heavy downpour storm, you don’t want your basement flooding while you sleep.

So here’s what we did. First off, at our previous house we had a 14KW power generator that powered the important stuff, like the computers in my home office during a prolonged outage, but in my new house there is no generator and we didn’t think we needed one because 1) I was no longer working and 2) long power outages are less common here because of underground utilities… however, what happens if there’s a prolonged power outage? I bought a portable power generator that will cover the sump pump and a second submersible pump in case the basement starts to flood. (Power outages and strong wind and rain storms go hand in hand here.) If we are out or on vacation, we’re screwed if the power goes out since there’s nobody there to start the emergency generator and after a few hours of no sump pump the basement will be flooded.

So back to the original sump pump issue. One suggestion was that we upgrade the pump to something bigger than 1/3 hp, which makes sense, so when we do have a lot of rain the pump should be able to keep up with the inflow. Another suggestion was to get a dual pump with the secondary pump on battery so if the power goes out the secondary pump keeps working, although at a lower output than the primary. That buys us time to get home and turn on the generator which will power the primary pump and recharge the battery. So we purchased a 1/2 hp pump with a battery backup for the built-in secondary pump. Finally, most people I’ve talked to think a 5-gallon bucket with holes drilled in it is not satisfactory for a sump basin, so we’re buying a 20-gallon basin that will hold 4 times the amount of water. That, in addition to the new dual pump, should take care of the sump pump problems we are seeing.

Sounds like a great solution. I suspected you need a bigger basin too. Thanks for the update.
