> Ted Turner, the media maverick and philanthropist who founded CNN, a pioneering 24-hour network that revolutionized television news, died peacefully Wednesday, surrounded by his family, according to a news release from Turner Enterprises. He was 87.

I haven’t watched CNN in years or the Turner movie channel.

It will be interesting to see if this has an impact on his massive land holdings here in Montana. I’m sure he has a rock solid succession plan.

To be fair, Turner hadn’t directly owned any of those channels since 1996 (when Turner Broadcasting merged with Time Warner), and Turner himself, who had remained as an officer with Time Warner, resigned as a Vice Chairman in 2003, and stepped down from the board of directors in 2006.

I remember, when we first got cable TV in the early '80s, his very visible presence on cable, between what was then still “Superstation WTBS” and CNN. He was brash and charismatic, and he did a lot to shape what cable was in the 1980s.

He was also the owner of the Atlanta Braves, and made headlines for making himself the on-field manager of the team (which lasted one game, before the president of the National League forced him to step down), and for having one of his players – Andy Messersmith – who wore jersey #17, wear the word “Channel” on the back of his jersey, rather than his name, as an ad for WTBS (this, too, only lasted for one game).

I’m 66. He should have been at least 97 by my internal “they’re rich and famous so they must be MUCH older than I am” gauge.

Various sources I’m finding say somewhere between 113,000 and 148,000 acres.

He owned a _ton_ of land, across the U.S. and Argentina. Wikipedia indicates that he owned over 2 million acres of personal land and ranch land across North America. One of the things he used this land for was for bison ranching; he allegedly owned the largest bison herd in the world. (And, TIL that the “Ted” in the restaurant chain “Ted’s Montana Grill” was Turner.)

Or a block of land 10x20 miles. Which is the merest drop in the bucket of unoccupied land in any Western state.

The scale of things in the US northeast vs the scale in the Far West is very, very different. So different as to be hard for anybody from one environment to grok the other.

Ted Turner had been out of the public eye because he had Lewy body dementia, the same disease that killed Robin Williams.

Some people also believed he was, in some way, behind the controversial and now-demolished Georgia Guidestones. He wasn’t.

My aunt has the disease, as well. Her speech became halting a few years ago, and now she might be able to say a single word every now and again. It’s terrible.

(Also, technically, Lewy body dementia was “only” the indirect cause of Williams’ death; he took his own life due to its effects on him.)

Is she with it mentally aside from language loss? I’m not familiar.

It varies. Sometimes she seems to be very engaged when people are talking, and following along, and she is still really good at assembling jigsaw puzzles. But, other times, she seems to drift off, and I think that, overall, she’s become more limited mentally.

Turner was one of the most interesting personalities of the 20th century. Giant flaws and giant accomplishments. He may be forgotten today but any decent business historian will devote time to a serious look to his life.

It’s very difficult to be part of a conversation if you don’t speak.

You are left to live inside your head. And that itself causes some mental illness. I believe.

Sad about Ted. Two of my favorite channels were directly created by him. I couldn’t live without TCM at this point.

I’ve turned CNN off for the foreseeable future. I’m boycotting news channels 100%.

Absolutely. In the span of a little over a decade, he went from owning a billboard advertising company to building a cable TV empire, owning two professional sports teams, and winning the America’s Cup yacht competition. He was brash, irascible, and larger-than-life, but he also was a brilliant businessman and visionary.
