David Hahn, I remember reading an article on him in the Sunday Times magazine. As mentioned, he scraped the face off glow in the dark watches. He also used IIRC a geiger counter to track down sources of radium, one hunt had him chasing a bus for a pretty innocuous item, but his big hit was the radium paint.

And if you google “hyperbolic chamber”, the first hit is the Onion article, but it’s followed by a few real articles where the reporter actually used hyperbolic when he meant hyperbaric.
