I received a telegram in 1997. It was the first and last I ever got. My then-fiancee was having a moment when she needed to reach me, so she contacted Western Union, who obligingly took the message and sent it to the Navy, who then radioed it to my ship. These days all sailors have email accounts, so this is rather beside the point. ---

Today (Wednesday, April 30) is the final day for Thailand’s telegram service. There’s a story from the other day [here](http://nationmultimedia.com/search/page.news.php?clid=22&id=30071722). And an editorial from today is [here](http://www.dailyxpress.net/search/page.news.php?clid=9&id=1868). They’ve been urging people to show up and send a final telegram for old times sake.
