They say it beats the alternative.

I received a telegram in 1997. It was the first and last I ever got.

My then-fiancee was having a moment when she needed to reach me, so she contacted Western Union, who obligingly took the message and sent it to the Navy, who then radioed it to my ship.

These days all sailors have email accounts, so this is rather beside the point.

They’ve been urging people to show up and send a final telegram for old times sake. I can’t make it. The wife said she’d try, but I don’t think she can swing by there, either.
