I love TWOP. It ranks right up there with the SDMB on my essential website list. I can’t even watch a show anymore without running to TWOP to check out what they’re saying.
However…
I am not registered there. The moderators are nuts, and truly deserve some of the invective that is occasionally spewed undeservedly toward the good, decent, fair moderators of the SDMB.
Many of the fans there (West Wing board, I’m looking at you) are seriously insane. I particularly love it when they viciously attack a plot point they consider to be inaccurate or non-continuous, when they have completely misunderstood the story or are just plain wrong.
I think that the worst thing show producers could do would be to change shows based on fanboard input. Although I have no illusions about television being great art, I can’t help thinking that that would be similar to Picasso or Monet adding more blue to a painting so that it would go better with someone’s sofa. Good television shows have an internal integrity that comes from being well-written, not from hiring a sexy actor or having Jane and Joe kiss because the fans think they look so cute together.
I did get a kick out of The West Wing’s sly parody of TWOP. More recently they attacked television uber-fandom in general, with a sub-subplot about a White House staffer who was a Star Trek fan.
