I would like to add “compared to Blasters or Scrappers” to that sentence. JB can one-shot a yellow minion with KO Blow with Rage running. As soon as I recover from my vacation, I need to get back in the game. I haven’t gotten to hit a villain in weeks.
The login message includes any trials, freespecs, or vet respecs you have claimed. I have something like 8 or 9 on JB, and that only because I actually used the last freespec. And he also has something like 44 tailor tokens. He doesn’t change clothes very often.
Should you stay, you should join CECIL global chat, although trying to map character names to global chat names to SDMB names is kind of confusing at times. I’m Brainiac4 in global chat.
I’m mostly playing Doctor Infernal (fire/rad/fire controller) these days on Virtue. If you want to see high-level content and powersets in action, Dangerosa and I can bring you along for a few missions sidekicked up to our level (okay, our level minus 1).
I started playing CoH when the Saga of Ryzom went off the air due to financial problems. Interesting game, and I will continue to play it (I’m on Triumph server), but now that Ryzom is back up and running (Ryzom - Free to Play Open-Source MMORPG | Windows, Mac & Linux), I won’t be spending as much time in the CoH world.
Made 14 yesterday and learned to fly. It kicks all kinds of ass. Being the typical first time flyer what did I do? I of course flew up to stand on top of Atlas. (and got a badge telling me that everyone does that…)
My favorite thing to do now is zoom around the city and find criminals. Then just hover over them and rain down the fiery death. It really is a lot of fun. And I went ahead and paid for the game.
And yes, the first thing I did with Hover on my very first character was fly to the top of the globe (there wasn’t a badge up there back then). Then I chased down the Atlas Park blimp and tried unsuccessfully to stand on it.
I took Super Speed instead of Fly for my first character, but even then I spent hours running around the city full-tilt and laughing my head off. All of the travel powers are a blast. The downside is, when you start a new character (and you will), levels 1-13 are going to feel interminably slow. 1-10 goes pretty quick, at least.
Mechanics-wise, you took Hover as your pre-req for Fly, right? It’s a good idea to switch over to Hover when you’re about to enter combat. It offers more precise control (Fly has inertial drift), and it uses less Endurance. Fire blasters eat Endurance pretty quickly, so the more you can save the better. If you’re in an open-air environment, or an enclosed area with high ceilings, Fly makes for a good escape route, too. Just go straight up, and most enemies won’t be able to follow.
Already did! I have 3 right now, my main who is now 14 a villian who is 6 and another hero that I haven’t gotten out of the tutorial yet.
Yep, I figured out really quickly that fly drains my endurance like no tomorrow when in combat and that switching to hover was smart. I actually fell out of the air once before I learned that. Getting the heck out of dodge by shooting straight up in the air is a tactic I discovered really fast.
I should make some endurance reducers to mitigate that a bit more now that I got through the invention prelims.
I’m soooo glad I’m not the only one who did that! Final day of beta testing on the game, I got flight about 25 minutes before the game closed up. The skies of Atlas Park were my playground.
And I think I’m going to take a look at CECIL. I’ve started playing CoH again, partially due to WoW burn-out, and I’m looking to see what’s new.
You can get the Raptor Pack through the first safeguard by level 5 if you’re so inclined, which provides 2 hours of flight. (More than enough to get you to level 14 if you use it sparingly.) The top of Atlas was the first place I went once I got that, too.
Even now, I’ll hang out on top of buildings if I don’t have anywhere to be but want to stay in the game. The vistas are excellent, even if the War Walls cut them short. Sort of a habit I picked up when I first took Teleport; unless you’ve got at least 3 Endurance Reduction DOs in Teleport, you’ll usually run out of End midway across a map. Since Teleporting is best done in the air, that means I’d have to find a perch on top of a building to rest and regain End.
Word of advice: Don’t go overboard on the Invention Enhancements. Dual- and Single-Origins are significantly cheaper, although of course the trade-off is that they reduce in value. Level 20 IOs are useful when you get to level 17, as they’re 19.2%, which is the max amount you can get with DOs and won’t decrease in effectiveness. Those will last you until level 22, when you can start getting SOs, and SOs will knock IOs out of the park until level 35 or so.
Obviously, you’re still learning the game, so take that as advice only and don’t be afraid to experiment. Nothing, and I mean nothing except for your primary and secondary powersets, is irreversible.
It used to be that Fly cost even more endurance; you could easily drain yourself dry if you lacked Stamina just flying, much less fighting at the same time. It got a boost in speed and a cut in endurance cost just before wings came in, as I recall.
Speaking of Endurance; at 20 you’ll want to pick up Stamina; as Bosstone says it makes a huge difference. Since it requires 2 other powers from the Fitness Pool to get, you’ll want to be planning ahead for it.
I decided to be silly last night. I created the Pink Speeder. She’s got pink pigtails, a two-tone pink outfit (high boots, miniskirt and sleveless school top) Mutation Scrapper and she’s taking speed as her travel skill. She is a lot of fun, I’ve been abusing the victory, cheer and dance emotes with her.
So if (in a few more levels) you see a pink blur race past you shouting “PINK POWER!”…well that’s me.
Sounds like someone has come down with a case of altitis. Don’t worry, it isn’t painful or fatal, you just take a long time getting someone to level 50. I am familiar with it, although I only have a minor case. There are only 4 or 5 more on the Test server that are not counted on that list. And while it is not completely accurate because the site was down for several months, I do still only have 1 level 50. And I have been playing since the first day the game came out.
I do that with every MMO I play, I have at least 5 characters in every game I’ve tried. But I always have a main that I level up. (I started thursday and my main is 15 as of last night)
I have 5 villain bases on Victory; I’m inviting everyone to come over and help me with the new base detals and possibly a collaboration on writing some new arcs.
