Tell me about Flash Gordon (the movie)

You guys are all missing the best line of the movie. Ming explaining to his daughter about humans:

Princess: “Water is leaking from their eyes!”

Ming: “Tears. It’s a sign of their weakness.”

(paraphrased from memory, and used withouth permission)…TRM

Timothy Dalton. Wearing a fabulous green outfit. (Sigh.)

I don’t know how old Dalton is now, but he doesn’t seem to age. Did you see him in “The Lion in Winter”? I mean, that movie was made in 1968 (or 72) or something! He still looks great today!

And Brian Blessed. And Ming’s makeup. There are so many things to appreciate about this movie.

I just saw it recently, and I heartily enjoyed it.

The coolest spaceship name ever: War Rocket Ajax.

"Take the Earth girl … Prepare her for our pleasure!"

Of course I had to watch the movie again last night after reading this thread.

“Clytus, have you ever seen such response?”
“No, truly she even rivals your daughter!”

And with all due respect, Tim, the best line of the movie has to be, when Flash asks a wounded Hawk Man how bad he’s hurt, he responds “They just winged me!”

The wedding vows are my favorites.
“Do you promise to use her as you will?”

“Certainly!”

“Not to blast her into space?”

<dark look from Ming>

“Until such time as you grow weary of her…”

“Of course!”
And the costumes! Good god. Everything in spandex and most of it beaded within an inch of it’s life.

No, no, no…

It’s

“Do you, Ming the Merciless, Ruler of the Universe, take this woman, Dale Arden, to be your Empress of the Hour?”
“Of the hour, yes.”
“Do you promise to use her as you will?”
“Certainly!”
“Not to blast her into space?..uh, until such time as you grow weary of her?”
“I do.”
Dale: “I do NOT!”

Oh, and I loved how the mincing pet in a Dino De Laurentis film was named “Fellini.”

Heh.

I bow to Otto’s superior Flash knowledge.
I want some of that wine that they brought to Dale that she ended up convincing the slave drink.

Here’s a site full of images and screen captures from the movie. The Gallery description says there are over 200 of them.

I didn’t look at them all, but Rilchiam, you should be able to see several scenes pretty much completely and get an idea of the special effects.

[trivia hijack] IIRC, Blessed and Coltrane were also both in Branagh’s Henry V.
Blessed played Exeter and Coltrane was Falstaff in a flashback[/hijack]
Anyway, I like the scene where the Princess sits on Flash’s lap.

be sure to ask for it by name. Heh.

Oh, and to the OP, this magnificent movie isn’t yet out on DVD. Maybe they could be watching it on tape instead?

Er, amend my previous to “is out of print on DVD.” Cheez, I was looking right at it on Amazon and typed “not out yet” anyways.

Yes, it is. I got it for $10 at Target! Well worth having, because there are still people who haven’t been exposed to it!

“This Ming… is a psycho!”

Arden, thank you for the link!

I think I’m going to have to see this, based on what y’all have said. I should be able to get it at Odyssey…

How about the spaceships towing the banners at the wedding: All creatures will make merry…Under pain of death!.
