Tell me about Hypothyroidism

I wasn’t experiencing any symptoms that stood out to me, but was told I had hypothyroidism. I think pretty mild, since I take only .88 something or others. It hasn’t made any difference that I can see, but they say to treat it because “someday” it will affect my heart. Since it doesn’t make any recognizable difference to me, I take it.

I also wonder if it is weight-related, and I’ve lost some weight so I look forward to retests next year which may come back with new results.

Sorry, that’s 88 MCG.

No, it’s micrograms, but it’s 50, not 5. (I had to go check.) I was on the same dose for years, but my current doctor bumped it up a bit–I take two pills on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

Not a doctor either, but I just came to suggest that it might be MVP. Sometimes my heart skips a beat, and then pumps really hard, like it’s got to make up for the last one. I can feel the pulse all the way through my fingertips. They come in varying levels of worrisome, though mine has not been a problem yet. I have to take antibiotics whenever I go to the dentist, but that’s about it.

She hasn’t been checked for that. She went back today to her regular doctor who finally recommended an OB/GYN at least. Maybe a new doctor will seem a little more concerned about a 19 year old with no periods. I don’t think I’m overreacting to be totally freaked out by this. Grr.

I’m glad your hormones are okay Jetgirl! I wonder, you said your palpitations were also after high carb meals. Is that commong with mitral valve prolapse? She also says her lips sometimes feel slightly numb when this happens.

My dog has hypothyroidism. He’d put on some weight and slept like a slug most of the time. So we put him on thyroid meds and he’s still looks like a furry sausage and sleeps like a slug most of the time.

Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful.

Dogzilla my daughter would say she and your dog have a lot in common right now.

Is she gassy?

I’ve been taking 25 micrograms of synthroid daily for about a year now. I can’t say that I’ve noticed much difference in my general well-being as a result. Of course, my thyroid levels weren’t all that low (otherwise I’d be on a higher dose).

Like the OP, I have had problems with palpitations; they’re a bit less frequent these days. I’m not sure synthroid has much to do with that, as I also take Toprol & Imdur for other heart issues (mitral/tricuspid regurgitation, angina, LVH) . Toprol, in particular, has reduced my heart rate 10-20 beats per minute, and seems to dampen the natural tendency of the heart to speed up when exercising or under stress.

I have Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis which swings back and forth between hyper and hypo - challenging. I actually had a benign tumor and the right side of my thyroid taken out so I take a medication to regulate called Synthroid. Took a while to get dialed in and every once in a while it needs adjustment. You will need to pay very close attention to your body during treatment.

You also want to be aware that certain foods or diet pills can exacerbate the symptoms by increasing your metabolism (part of the job of the thyroid), like soy for example.

Good luck with your tests and I hope that you get regulated quickly.

I was frequently exhausted. And my memory was fuzzy. Hope you get things straightened out.

If you are diagnosed, make sure to get the generic name for it (here it’s only $4/month for me), since Synthroid is the brand name and it’s pricey.
