Tell me about Salt Lake City

I’ve also heard that their rock concerts are some of the wildest on the planet. :o

Yes indeed. A drive into the mountains just east is well worth while. Check out Heber City and Timpanogos Cave National Monument.

If you look east toward the mountains, you’ll see some “benches” - level areas running along the foothills. These are shoreline remnants of Lake Bonneville, which occupied a huge part of Utah until about 14,500 years ago, when it started to drop. (First in a massive flood that drained ~ 1000 cubic miles of water northward into the Snake River). The highest lake level would have put SLC something like 900 feet under water.

You get a great smell from the bread factory as I-80 bends to the south before shooting off east into the mountains.

All my other observations are out of date.

Wife and I happen to be visiting SLC now. I’ll second kitap’s mention of the Natural History Museum. We went there yesterday for our 3rd time. Red Rock Brewery is another of our favorites.
But the best part of SLC is the skiing. There are 6-8 ski resorts within an hour of downtown. The competition keeps lift prices low. The snow is plentiful and has a dry character that resists slushiness.

Oh, Antelope Island! We saw both antelope and buffalos.

Capn Carl, definitely check out the Museum of Ancient Life at that Thanksgiving Point complex. I wasn’t expecting much but it was truly excellent.

Thanks, kitap, we’ll check it out.

if you are into bio sciences at all the great salt lake is a kinda unique environment with alot of interesting quirks.

Salt Lake City is surrounded by mountains and ski resorts just a short distance away. You can get to Park City from the SLC airport in about 40 minutes. I flew into SLC twice last year to go skiing (in January and December). It’s probably my favorite place to go skiing to date. Great western snow conditions (much better than New England) without the extreme altitude of Colorado, plus it’s close to the airport.

Salt city has fine independent, public radio station.

Back when bars had memberships, in one martini bar we went to the membership was $1 and you got to bring 10 guests.

We were looking at SLC for a meeting, and saw a video from the Convention and Video Bureau. I’ve seen many such videos, but none had nearly as many shots of people drinking as the SLC one. The perception that the place is dry must be widespread.

There is also decent free (in one sector, at least) light rail that runs by the Temple and Convention Center.

Walked around downtown this afternoon. Very clean city with super wide sidewalks and streets. Yeah there’s a homeless person or two but not on the scale I’ve seen in Philly or New York.

The Temple is under restoration unfortunately. Stopped in the HUGE LDS Convention Center to get warm and look around. There was hardly anyone around until I checked out a room with model of the Temple.

There was a group of among the hottest 20 somethings I had ever seen, in the long dresses and one let me know they were Missionaries if I had any questions. Then an older woman approached me and offered me a tour and pointed to a gentleman that could give me a tour of the rooftop garden.

I perhaps unfairly started getting Time-Share salesman vibes and politely excused myself. I’m not even a good Episcopalian, let alone would make a good Mormon!

One food recc: Maxwells has among the best buffalo wings I’ve ever had, anywhere!

I stayed in the hotel next to the Temple once. These ladies have their own floor(s) and own elevator. Not knowing, I tried to get on it once and the chaperone/guard got really upset.
