I have to add that I love how Kima being lesbian does *not * define her character, IMO. Too many times on tv, the gay character’s main trait is being gay on the show. Kima is a cop first, a woman in second place and at a distant 15th place, oh, she happens to be lesbian.
With this, I mean that we see her go through all the humdrum parts of life where her sexual orientation is not the motivation for her actions. Very true to life, I think.
Which is also why one of my favorite moments is her calling home to say that she’s taking a prisoner to NY or something. My memory on the details is hazy for a fav moment, but it was how that scene was connected to another character that made it for me, not what actually happened in the scene.
Ha! That scene cracked me up more than anything since Arrested Development.
And, yes, Omar pretty much rules the scene-stealing on the show.
Without too many spoilers (I hope), THE moment for me is Sgt. Landsman at the wake at the pub in S3.
I already thought of about ten other scenes while I was typing that, but I’m going to leave it at one or we’d be here all night.
Bodie on the corner at the end of Season 4.
Mcnulty and Bunk investigating the crime scene in S1.
I think I agree on this. I didn’t like Omar until this very scene.
Who are everyone’s favorite characters? Mine are Bodie, Slim Charles, and Landsman.
“Where’s Wallace, String? Where’s Wallace?”
The anguish in DeAngelo’s voice when he says this is heartbreaking.
Favorite characters:
Omar (everyone is surprised at this choice I’m sure)
Bubbles
Stringer Bell
Prop Joe
Lester Freamon
Best scene:
Bunk talking to Omar about the way things used to be
Favorite characters:
Cool Lester Smooth
Avon Barksdale
Weebay
Iconic moment. . . Randy Wagstaff: “you got my back, right? you got my back, right?”
or Snoop in the Home Depot. So funny.
Loved this scene! The look and shrug from Phelan when Levy gestured an objection was priceless. I replayed that scene several times after S5E1 (you know the one I mean).
Another of my favorites was when the towers came down and, as Bodie and Poot talk about memories and first sexual experiences, the parallels between Bodie’s saying “you keep screwing the same girls and getting burned” and the trap of the Game was so onpoint and eerie, almost Beckian.
My favorite character though was Bodie – a soldier 'til the end, not 'cause he was ruthless or power-hunger but 'cause he played the hand he was dealt and did it with integrity and loyalty. And he was cute.
I really loved Bodie, too. If I actually met him in real life, with him on the corner in his element, I’d probably be terrified (The Wire is such a foreign world for me), but I like him.
As for iconic moments, the episode that I first realized The Wire was unlike anything I’d seen before was when Bodie and Poot did their thing in the first season (OP requested no spoilers, but you know what I mean). The lead-up to that was heartbreaking and I was literally on the edge of my seat, heart-pounding, guts being ripped to shreds. I just didn’t expect it, not from the way the characters had been built up, not from what I know about how television works. Yet it was done so naturally that I can’t think of any other way it could have turned out.
The moments y’all have mentioned are great, too. Snoop at the hardware store and Omar in court were just two of the most amusing things I’ve ever seen.
I have got to get off this medicine soon! I meant S5E8.
Oh, man, this is such a spoiler, but I* love * this moment:
At the end of Season 3, when Avon and Stringer are talking for the last time, and there’s this moment when they realize they’ve both betrayed the other. Gives me chills.
Favorite characters: Bunk and Omar.
They used alot of Maryland and D.C. actors & got the accents more right than wrong
Your interpretation may be right, but I was thinking that scene was more about
when they realized how different their goals were, that they were moving in different directions, and that their lifelong bond was irretrievably broken (in addition to Stringer haven’t had D’Angelo offed). Bell didn’t know Avon had betrayed him until right before Mouzone and Omar shot him and Avon didn’t know until McNutly showed him Stringer’s name as CI on the warrant.
It’s still a powerful scene though, I agree with you there.
Oh good, because you were like, “You know what I mean” and I totally didn’t… so yeah, I know what you mean now.
About Stringer and Avon on the roof:
I think they were each thinking about their betrayal of each other, and saying goodbye to each other silently, realizing there was no more “us.” It’s a testament to how hard they both are that they could each go through with their planned betrayal despite their obvious love for each other. In fact, I think that they were each the person that the other loved the most in the world if the truth were to be told, but they still sold each other out.
All in the game, baby.
