Tell me about VoIP

My first post in this thread was 2 1/2 months ago (thanks to the bumper!).

My opinion of Vonage hasn’t changed: it’s still a great deal.

Of course, I was someone who had moved so much in recent years that the only consistent phone number was my cell phone. That is my contact number, period. A home phone was just a way to get DSL and order pizza.

But the world is changing, and my current location requires no phone line for DSL, and pizza places now accept cell phones. I traded a $45/month bill for a basic landline for a $15/month bill for a Vonage line. I still have a home phone number (plus I can pick my area code), but that line does NOT get hit by telemarketers. The difference is amazing: with my “new” landline, I had telemarketers calling within one week. I would average 5 calls a day. With the Vonage number I have had ZERO telemarketer calls in 3 months.

As far as service, I must be lucky…I have never had an outage. Every time I pick up my phone I get a dial tone. (Except for one time when my modem needed to be reset…that was a 30-second fix).

I mentioned this before, but I’ll mention it again:

  1. You can choose your area code. If you have just moved and have a lot of friends/family in a different area code, just choose that area code as your new number so all of the calls are local.

  2. You can get amazinlgy cheap rates on international calls. I call my sister (Dallas, TX to London, UK) for three cents/minute.

YMMV, of course, but I have been nothing but impressed.
