We have that now. Definately in the must column.
Hmm… it would be by the sea - like, right by the sea, probably set into/on a cliff, with big windows so I could watch the sea crashing against the rocks, but with steps leading down to a sheltered cove. Decent sized garden, but not too big - and, importantly, on several levels. Where I live at the moment is dead flat and I always think multi-level properties are so much more interesting: you know, you can enter the house at “ground level” and then go up or down a couple of floors and still come out at ground level at another side of the house.
I’d have a big soundproof room with space for a monster drum kit, oh, and a garage big enough to fit my damn car in (British house builders apparently think that we all still drive Austin A30s  )
Oh, and it would have sufficient water pressure for a decent shower…
My house is like that now. You enter through the front door and are in the foyer. This level has a living room / family room, a bedroom, a bathroom, laundry area, and garage entrance. You go up a flight of stairs into the living room, dining room, kitchen, master bedroom, bathroom. But if you look out the window of the bedroom, the ground is right below it. Out the living room window you are about 1.5 stories above the ground, and out the kitchen window (above the front door) you are 2 stories high. It’s actually pretty cool.
On a cliff by the pacific (great storm watching)
Great room
Built from logs.
Huge fireplace and a window seat.
No walls.
Big property.
Dog.
Yeah, I guess I do.
I drink water all day long (about 1 gallon a day) so you can imagine how that keeps things flowing! I’ve had many close calls while trying to make it up my stairs to the bathroom! It’s definitely not fun!
I forgot to mention another thing I’d like to have is a wrap around porch to sit and enjoy the evenings on warm nights.
A Drain. In the floor of the garage or mudroom or bathroom… Because there comes a time in every life when you have to hose down a muddy child, pet or husband BEFORE they get to the carpet.
A bed and bath on ground level… Because of broken legs, strained backs etc. Sometimes you just can’t climb stairs.
And I once saw a dining room that had bookcases on every wall. Rather than have a room that was rarely used, the dining room did double duty as a library. I thought that was a great idea.
Amen to that! Now, that’s what I’m talking about!
I would like a cob cottage. Maybe half-timber, but definitely with a foundation built with native stone. Not a “hippie-esque” cottage, but a very quaint, English village cottage. Wide, low windowsills to be turned into windowseats. Room for a kitchen garden in back. Whitewashed walls. Tons of built-in bookshelves.
It’s my dream to build this house someday. After I graduate college, find a secure job, and save up the money. I’ll probably be 65 by the time that happens.
My must have list:
- A fire pole.
My dream home would be a colonial. A real colonial. As in from before 1776.
Here in the immediate northern suburbs of Boston I see them all over the place.
I will point out to my husband the ones we should buy, but he usually just reminds me that they’re not for sale. Damn inconvenient of them.
Number of bedrooms doesn’t matter.
Attached barn would be nice but is not essential.
This one is perfect. Unfortunately the Arlington Historical Society is living in it and won’t move out! Grrr. http://www.arlingtonhistorical.org/house/index.php
I especially like the ones that sit askew from the road, like this one: http://www.realtor.com/Prop/1042184418
Couple o’ other ones I think are neat:

Lots of bedrooms and bathrooms. I come from a large family and I’d love to have room - and facilities - for everyone if they all showed up at once. 'Round here, such a house will run a couple million though.
Here’s mine:
[ul][li] On nice country road. Neighbors but not close.[/li][li] Lots of open land, but set back in large grove of oak trees.[/li][li] Victorian style, with wrap-around porches all across front and down one side, upstairs and downstairs.[/li][li] Large livingroom (32x20) leading off into large dining-room and sun-room, with open decks off each.[/li][li] Separate garage (roof extending from backdoor to garage.)[/li][li] 5 bedrooms (2 equal to master bedrooms, and 1 small one with it’s own full bathroom.)[/li][li] 4-1/2 bathrooms[/li][li] circular staircase leading from sun-room/dining-room up to office/den with six double windows giving view across country side (one house barely seen), same view below.[/li][li] Bathroom in master bedroom approximately 18x14 with built-in shower, jacuzzi bath tub, double sink counter, door into large closet with skylight.[/li][li] Galley kitchen large enough for two, but with everything in easy reach.[/li][li] other amendities.[/ul][/li]The description is easy, since I live in it. [sup]But I’m retired and you too can have your dream![/sup]
My dream house would be:
–within walking distance of a downtown. I was just in Santa Cruz, CA, and Pacific Avenue there is quite a nice little area–interesting shops (not chains), bookstores (it’s a college town), restaurants, and movie theaters.
–equipped with a home theater, preferably in a basement so that I can crank up the sound.
–surrounded by trees but have a big lawn, maybe a pool. Gotta be able to stretch out my legs.
–have built-in bookcases. I like books.
I’m jealous. I go back and forth between wanting a castle and a Victorian house with huge wraparound porches on both floors :).
On a similar note…
The town I grew up in has a great old water tower that was converted to an apartment building about ten years ago. It would need a little bit of remodeling, but it comes pretty close to the home of my dreams.
Like I said, a little bit of remodeling.
Cisco, there is a small town near here named DeFuniak Springs (pronounced “da-FYOO-nee-ack”), it has several Victorian homes like that. They are beautiful houses, most of them are circling a small lake right next to “downtown”. Right now they are all decked out with Christmas lights, and the drive around the lake is stunning.
Here’s a pic of one of them: DeFuniak Springs Victorian house
Very nice, thanks. And I love Florida.
To be honest I’d just love to hve a detached house, with garden on all sides. At the moment I’m in a semi-detached (well, end of terrace, really) and it would be great to be able to make loads of noise occasionally… my neighbours are very quiet, so they don’t annoy me, but it means I’d feel guilty about disturbing them with loud music etc.
My dream house? It would have a view of the ocean… from every single portlight. Except when at anchor. Then the view would be of sashaying tropical wahines…
Sigh… back to my cubicle now.
Nothing wrong to have a couple of choices. Never know when the opportunity will come along. We got the basic house because of a bank repossession. We added two bedrooms, a foyer and bathroom in built-in garage to accommadate our family. Then separate garage was added. We had an achitect draw up the addition for diningroom, sunroom, office, etc., then waited 11 years to get contractor to complete the finished product. Patience is a good quality to have when trying to get your “dream home”.
