Tell me about your expensive hobby.

I’m addicted to crafting period. Knitter/crocheter (And wow, does crochet use up more yarn!) But all the pretty fibers! I bought so much hand dyed stuff off eBay Hubster is allowing me to get into spinning and dying myself. This is of course because I made a spreadsheet of how much it would save us. Now I’ll have to go after the spinning wheel.
Vintage embroidery patterns? A few hundred in the past month.
Sewing, I seem not to be able to survive without at least my weight in fabric.
And any craft idea that grabs me at the moment.
I’ve spent tons of money on scrapbooking.

Hubster and I both do Warhammer (40K and Fantasy) We haven’t done much roleplaying lately, but we still have a library.
And he likes cars, Studebakers to be exact. Still not cheap.

Watches:

As posted before, I own quite a few of them, including one watch which would have normally cost a fortune. OK, maybe not a fortune, but as much as some cars.

Second would be golf. I’ve got a membership at a course, so the fees aren’t as much, so it’s about $65 per time. I’m also taking weekly golf lessons with my wife, hitting the course 3 or 4 times a month and the driving range once or twice week.

Let’s see, the tolls roads to my course are about $30 per trip. I usually take a friend and share that.

When I golf at other courses, then it’s usally $160 to $250.

Third is travel. In this last year, my wife and I went to Bali on our honeymoon, went to up Hokkaido, down to Kyoto, Korea, Taiwan a few times, back to the States, and Vietnam.

Forth is eating out. We often go out with friends as well as dates for ourselves.

Drinking beer and smoking cigerettes up to two packs a day at least and a case of beer a day. I would say a very expensive hobby, maybe not a hobby but can’t afford to have a hobby. LOL

Aren’t they amazing? Gorgeous colors and scenes, and often gold gilt on them. ::drool

Ferrets . Currently, I have three and got the cage for free because two were rescues and the old owners wanted to be rid of the ferrets and all their stuff. Still, outfitting the cage, good food (only available online), treats, medical supplies, toys, etc. can really add up :smack:. Taking care of them is akin to a part-time job. Then, there is something called “ferret math” meaning that you always end up adding another one. I would like to have a business of ferrets (business is 5 or more), which means I need a second cage and double the price of everything mentioned before. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately), I don’t have the space right now.

Eventually, I would like to have 5-7 ferrets, 2 cats, and I am beginning to get interested in sugar gliders . However, I would need to have circumstances that would allow me to be home A LOT more to be able to take care of so many animals.

I also cross-stitch, but have trouble finding the time right now.

My hobbies are cheap compared to my hubbies. He is into filmmaking, computers, and home theater. I guess they are somewhat career-related since he does broadcast production work, but still I occassionally have to lay down the kabosh . I guess we save money on going out because our living room is a pretty awesome place to watch movies . I see no reason to spend money at the theater (and having to time my bathroom breaks :dubious:) when we basically have a better theater at home.

I’ve actually found pretty decent prices on most of them- the most expensive Hamilton I own cost about $1,200. However, the upkeep is pretty pricey. In order to maintain their value, you really need to use Hamilton parts, and I have had to send a few of off to have work done. The cheapest repair job I’ve had done was $900.

The most expensive watch I own- and this is going to make me sound like a total dilitante to people who are serious about fine timepeices- is a Solvil et Titus driving watch. It cost about $2,800. It was made in the 50s- it has a square face on a very, very thin back band, and the face is set at an angle so when you have your hands on the steering wheel, you can see the face at the proper angle. It is by far my favorite watch. I got it 5 or 6 years ago, and I was showing it to my husband and explaining the angle to him, and his response was, "But you have a clock in your car". Sigh.

lalalalalalalalalalalalalala I can’t hear you!!!

I have about a half hour until lunch, which would give me just enough time to get over there, pick up a yard or two or ten, and rush back to my office.

I won’t do it though.

Maybe tomorrow.

About 80% of my gross income gets spent on computers in some way shape or form.

The other thing I do, its not a real expensive hobby since I really only spend about $5-$10/week on it but it can be if I ran wild.

Dictionaries. I have it bad for dictionaries, especially the big fat hardbound ones that cost $60-$80 a pop.

Right now, I have about twenty-five dictionaries of various kinds, sizes, and languages, and about that many again language reference books of other kinds.

Happily, being a translator, I have a legitimate excuse to buy as many as I want.

Do you live in a shelter built entirely of computers? Do you drive a computer?

I collect, build, convert, paint, and game with miniatures. 40k, Warmachine, Battletech, VOR, Mekton, D&D, and probably a few others I’m forgetting. I own between 2 and 3 thousand miniatures. I bought something off of a Ral Partha distributor once, and he came to my place to drop it off, and when he stepped into my apartment he stopped and said ‘Ok, you win’. I paint minis for people for money when I get time, and I have won awards before.

I don’t have any good pictures of my minis though, because I don’t own a digital camera. This has always kind of bugged me, I guess I’ll have to get one eventually.

(About spending $500 a week at 7-11)

My guess is lottery scratchers.

I finally had to quit the private-pilot flying, damn gas and rentals were just too expensive.

I think I’m going to go back to guitar playing, but the last time I did that I bought 3 guitars in the space of a couple of months…they’re just so pretty…and glossy…and sound so nice…I think my current guitars are lonely… :smack: snap out of it! :smack:

Oy. Same here. Both my husband and I love sailing and generally messing about with boats. Aside from the direct cost of the boats (we have two, plus an inflatable dinghy) and the annual costs of maintenance and upgrades (the rule of thumb is 10% of the purchase price per year), there’s all the other stuff, like yacht club memberships. Oh, and travel: we just got back from two weeks in Europe to watch the Louis Vuitton Cup competition. And the clothes! I bought an America’s Cup sweatshirt for 110 euros. It’s a real nice sweatshirt (and of course I didn’t NEED it) but yikes. At least once a year we go somewhere like the Caribbean for a week, charter a sailboat and sail around while drinking rum and beer (well, not while we’re sailing, but food and drink is a budget item.

Then there are the ridiculously elaborate pirate costumes I made a couple of years ago. We do get a lot of use out of them, but all that velvet and braid and those antique brass buttons added up to some serious dough.

Fortunately my husband does charters with our main boat to help offset our habit - er, hobby.

I almost hate to do this, but have you seen the gorgeous Australian Aboriginal-inspired fabrics? My closest store has a small but compelling selection.

Candles :::sigh::: I’m addicted to quality candles. Even though I buy them from the semi-annual clearance sales, discontinued scents, etc. I still easily spend $100-$200 per month. I usually have 4-6 burning throughout my home from the time I walk in after work until I go to bed. I’ve considered learning to make my own, but don’t want to take the time away from my newest hobby…

…which is the stained glass class I took earlier this year. Eye candy that serves no purpose other than it’s pleasing to my senses. I love the way it sparkles in different light throughout the day. So far I’ve spent around $1400 this year on the tools & a very small glass stash and only have four small pieces to show for it, but my skills are improving they look so pretty in the morning light.

I’ve sewn clothing and quilts for years, as well as cross stitch and crochet. I’ve kept the basic tools & accessories but have cleared out most of my stash from those hobbies by releasing them into the hands of other addicts via FreeCycle.

I’m in the clear on the cost of my vices because AdoptaHubby is an avid fisherman and pours a significant amount of our expendable money into his hole in the water/hobby - I couldn’t spend as much as he does each month even if I tried

And of course it will produce a beverage that is almost, but not quite, exactly unlike tea. :stuck_out_tongue:

Mine is also Magic.

Maybe we need to have a Magic Players vs. Knitters brawl? Or perhaps a Magic Players and Knitters social event of some sort? The knitters could knit little cozies in which the magic players could keep their deck boxes? The magic players could suggest color themes for knitting based on their favorite decks?

But they have poky needles, and our cardboard isn’t all that sharp. Worse, we online player don’t even have real cardboard to fling. (Fling? Ha, I slay me!)

Why haven’t we formed a MTG Online clan for the SDMB, anyway?

edit: So, yes, Magic for me as well. Online, now, although I still have tens of thousands of paper cards that I’m trying to sell to pay for a new backyard.

How does one spend over $2000 a month a 7-11?
