I know this thread is ten years old. But a current thread on grandparents got me to thinking about my own.

My grandparents on my father’s side were married in 1936 in Dayton, Ohio. They were Catholic, and each was raised in a Catholic household. Between 1938 and 1945 they had five children, all boys. My father was the second child:

In 1947, my grandparents (sans children) hopped in their car and drove all the way down to Acapulco, Mexico for vacation. They went fishing one day, and my grandmother caught a 114 pound sailfish:

My grandparents were having martial problems, mainly due to my grandfather’s drinking. He died in 1951. She remarried in 1952 and had four more children - two girls, and two boys - between 1953 and 1958. So she had a total of nine children.

I was born in 1967, so I never knew my “first” grandfather, but I remember my grandmother’s second husband. Both were wonderful people. I have fond memories of family parties. Lots of aunts, uncles, and cousins. They were a partying bunch; lots of beer and good food.

Both grandparents eventually died. I miss them.

Unfortunately I wasn’t nearly as close to my grandparents on my mother’s side.

My great grandfather once appeared in a book. He was the man who sold ice cream to Sal in _One Morning in Maine_

I actually have a signed copy of it from Robert McCloskey. Signed to my grandparents.
