Tell Me Everything About the iPod Touch

So the case comes packaged with the belt clip/holster or is it a separate purchase? Their website is vague on that. Annoyingly, I’ve been completely unable to find a decent case w/ clip locally and, so far, I’ve been reluctant to take a chance on buying anything online.

It comes with the holster, there are two current versions, Rev. 2 has no Otter logo on the inside of the holster, Rev. 3 does, 3 holds the case a tad more securely, if the case you buy comes with the Rev. 2 holster, call Otter and see if they can send you the Rev. 3, they’re generally good about sending a replacement

I like the iSkin cases - they are a nice material and are grippy and affer good protection without being bulky. You can see them on the manufacturer’s website but don’t buy them from there - they are much cheaper on Amazon or ebay. I have dropped my touch numerous times on tiled floors with the duo and vibes cases and they were fine.

I just sold my husband’s and my touches on ebay because we switched to the iphones. (good condition 8mb 2nd gen went for around $100 apiece, including the cases, BTW). It kind of was a pain carrying a phone and the touch everywhere, but if you don’t want to switch to AT&T/pay for a data plan, the touch is the way to go.

(AT&T has now dropped the prices on the 3GS phones and also dropped the prices for their data plans - they start at $14.99/mo now for 200MB. We bought them since we didn’t care enough about the screen resolution and video conferencing ability of the new version to pay extra. I am usually a “one release behind the newest” kind of person when it comes to technology.)

I was thinking of getting an Otterbox Defender for my Touch. I’m concerned about whether I’ll be able to use it with accessories. Do you think I could use an FM Xmitter like this? http://www.amazon.com/Wireless-transmitter-classic-iphone-player/dp/B001CGXM6K/ That looks like the cheapest one with decent reviews. I’d rather have one that attaches to the Ipod rather than dangling around on a cord.

Can I take it out quickly if I want to put the Ipod in a dock? Also, does it adversely affect the feel of the screen?

My others I was looking at are a cheap leather case which looks classy: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001JJRDVU/ref=ord_cart_shr?ie=UTF8&m=A1QGIDACEIIO9M

Or this case which isn’t as tough as yours but is supposed to work with docks and such: http://www.amazon.com/Agent18-ClearShield-Shell-touch-Clear/dp/B002RC5FOK/

I’m having a problem with my iPod Touch.

It’s running version 2 software and needs to be upgraded. But when I click the Upgrade button I get a pop-up telling me iTunes 9.1.1 is already the current version. I don’t want to update iTunes. That’s why I’m clicking on the iPod Upgrade button!

Johnny have you tried this page? iPod OS4

Often, you must first upgrade iTunes. Step 1 in the directions in CWN’s link says to be sure you are running the latest iTunes.

When I click Update on the iPod Summary screen, it tells me that iTunes is up to date. When I click iTunes => About iTunes, it tells me that I’m running iTunes 9, 9.1.1 (12). When I click iTunes => Check for updates, it says ‘This version of iTunes (9.1.1) is the current version.’ So I’m moderately certain that I’m running the latest version of iTunes.

Step 2 says to click on the iPod in the Source List on the left. Did that.

Step 3 says ‘In the iPod Touch Summary pane, click Check for Updates.’ There is an image that shows a Check for Update button and a Restore button. I do not have those buttons on the iPod Summary pane. I have Update and Restore. There is no Check for Update button.

As far as the FM transmitter goes, no, that most likely will not work with the Otterboxed iTouch, the 'Box has a thick plastic frame around the Dock connector to retain the rubber plug part of the case, you’ll have to get a dock extender for it, and you will probably have to file the edges down to get it to fit the 'Box opening, I use a Griffin Tech car charger for my iPhone, and I had to file down the edges of the plastic plug to get it to fit

as far as the built in screen protector affecting the feel of the screen, I don’t know, the first thing I always do with an Otterbox case is to remove the polycarb screen protector (it’s glued in with double-sided tape, it just pushes out, and you peel the adhesive strip off the case), I have a Zagg Invisible Shield protecting the screen anyway, and that does change the feel of the screen, gives it a somewhat soft, “tacky” feel, but it’s a phenominal screen protector

the leather case you linked to is more of a cosmetic protection case, as is the plastic hard-shell case, they will protect the iTouch from scratches and the like, but will NOT protect well against drops/impacts

IMHO, the Otterbox is the only truly protective iDevice case out there worth a damn, but you pay for that protection in a couple ways

1; dock accesories will either not work, or require some minor modifications
2; the front bezel is raised above the surface of the screen, while it does give increased protection against impact-related screen breakage (dropping the device face down on a hard flat surface), it also makes accessing the edges of the screen a tad more difficult
3; the case is not all that convenient to remove, once it’s on the iDevice, it’s pretty much there to stay, maybe take it off for the occasional cleaning of the iDevice, but it’s not a quick-remove case like the leather or plastic cases you linked to above

If you want the ultimate in PROTECTION for your iDevice, IMHO, there is no other choice worth considering

bear in mind, in my experience with the Otterbox, it has…
1; shielded my iPhone from drops from waist-height onto wood, linoleum, and concrete floors with no damage to the phone or case
2; protected my iPhone from bouncing off a metal shopping cart and landing face-down on concrete
3; the rubber flaps over the headphone jack and Dock connector have protected the iPhone from wind-driven rain, and even rain driven by a 60-80MPH wet microburst, if I was using a “naked” iPhone in those situations, the moisture sensors would have undoubtedly triggered, voiding the warranty, and the phone may even have sustained liquid damage, the flaps kept the iPhone bone-dry (the Zagg screen protector helped too)

No, I’m not an Otter employee, just a satisfied customer

My iTunes says 9.2 (61) - that should work with 10.4 - 10.6.

IIRC, 9.2 is required for iOS4.

Interesting. I did try to update iTunes and was told it was the current version. I’ve just done the Check for software update from the Apple menu, and there’s 9.2. Someone isn’t talking to someone.

I’m downloading the new iTunes, and will attempt to update the iPod when it’s done.
