I think part of what’s ironic about BR’s swordfighting tally is that he was in fact probably the best fencer in movies. He was a two-time British Army Fencing Champion.

Does skilled fencing translate into a realistic portrayal of actual combat? I think I read once that Oliver Reed came closest to what a real sword fight would look like.

</div>

And the related question, does realistic portrayal of actual combat make for a good movie?

I’ve heard that the actual most realistic sword duel in movies is the one at the start of The Count of Monte Cristo, where the two dudes draw, the more experienced one immediately skewers the other, and the less experienced one dies. Which is fine for a one-off scene to show that he’s a Bad Dude, but isn’t too engaging beyond that.

The others weren’t slouches in that regard either. As I said elsewhere/when, a real swordfight didn’t mean witty repartee and elegant moves; it meant using every tactic (fair and otherwise) that would get it over with quickly and allow one to leave with all vital body parts intact, unlike the other guy.

Less than a year before John Wilkes Booth shot Abraham Lincolm, his elder brother Edwin Booth rescued Lincoln’s son, Robert Todd Lincoln, from being hit by a train.

> Edwin Booth saved Abraham Lincoln’s son,[[17]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edwin_Booth#cite_note-17) [Robert Todd Lincoln](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Todd_Lincoln), from serious injury or even death. The incident occurred on a train platform in [Jersey City](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jersey_City), [New Jersey](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Jersey). The exact date of the incident is uncertain, but it is believed to have taken place in late 1864 or early 1865. Robert Lincoln recalled the incident in a 1909 letter to Richard Watson Gilder, editor of _The Century Magazine_.
>
> > The incident occurred while a group of passengers were late at night purchasing their sleeping car places from the conductor who stood on the station platform at the entrance of the car. The platform was about the height of the car floor, and there was of course a narrow space between the platform and the car body. There was some crowding, and I happened to be pressed by it against the car body while waiting my turn. In this situation the train began to move, and by the motion I was twisted off my feet, and had dropped somewhat, with feet downward, into the open space, and was personally helpless, when my coat collar was vigorously seized and I was quickly pulled up and out to a secure footing on the platform. Upon turning to thank my rescuer I saw it was Edwin Booth, whose face was of course well known to me, and I expressed my gratitude to him, and in doing so, called him by name.[[18]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edwin_Booth#cite_note-18)
>
> Booth did not know the identity of the man whose life he had saved until some months later, when he received a letter from a friend, Colonel [Adam Badeau](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam_Badeau), who was an officer on the staff of General [Ulysses S. Grant](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ulysses_S._Grant).

> Edwin Thomas Booth (November 13, 1833 – June 7, 1893) was an American actor who toured throughout the United States and the major capitals of Europe, performing Shakespearean plays. In 1869, he founded Booth's Theatre in New York. Some theatrical historians consider him the greatest American actor, and the greatest Prince Hamlet, of the 19th century. His achievements are often overshadowed by his relationship with his younger brother, actor John Wilkes Booth, who assassinated the 16th pres Boo...

Haha. Yeah. We have them around here. They make little piles of stuff. My wife and I each wondered about each other why the spouse made a little pile of twigs and flower petals on our deck.

Never said anything until curiosity got the better of us. That’s when we figured out there was a pack rat on our property.
