# Ten years too late: how do you party like its 1999?

It’s a reference to Prince’s _1999_- “two thousand zero zero party over, oops, out of time- so tonight I’m gonna party like it’s 1999”, presumably meaning with abandon and little thought to the aftermath, because we’ll all be dead anyway.

It also can refer to the end of the millenium. People would be partying extra hard on New Years Eve Dec 31, 1999.

No “presumably” about it, IMO; the lyrics specifically talk about partying in the face of an imminent apocalypse.
