It could be the pessimist in me but I have a feeling that was the turning point of the match. A miserable Murray is not a good sight.

Federer serves out the set 6-3. Murray does seem discouraged, and on the one hand you can’t blame him at all- but with Federer playing this well and holding a 2-1 lead, he needs to take a deep breath and not get too negative.

So this is something I’ve often wondered about. In a situation like this one, where you’re up a break - let’s say you win you’re own games with relative ease, you’ve broken, so you could basically roll down to winning the set. Is it worth the effort and energy trying to get another break, or does it make sense to just let your opponent take his games and focus on winning your own games, rather than waste energy battling him, trying to get a break? In this case, when Federer 5-2 up, Murray kept his own service rather more easily than during the previous game, and then Federer won the set on 5-3. Did he basically not give Murray a very hard time for that eight game of the set, so he move on and win it on the ninth?
ETA: David Beckham looks like a total douche with that facial hair.

Players with a lead will often decide to conserve their energy in that situation, yes. If your opponent gives you an opening, like a double fault to start the game or a loose point that gives you 15-30, you’d shoot for that second break, but if not, you try to save a little energy to serve it out.

Very easy hold for Federer to 2-2. He’s not exactly serving and volleying here, but he’s come to net a significant amount in this match- maybe more than any guy has done in the finals in many years. Murray is still serving well but he is starting to look tired.
The commentators pointed out that the sixth game of the third set was 26 points, and Shvedova’s golden set against Errani was 24 points.

Obviously momentum is with Federer here but Murray is unrecognisable from the guy who has never even won a set in his other finals. I reckoned it was a coin toss before the game and I still think it’ll go to the fifth.
Great game though.
Personally, though I’m from the UK, I’d be happy for Roger to win. Nothing against Murray, he is by far the greatest player never to win a major, but there is something compelling about Federer in full flow.
Even if Andy does lose he should take heart that he has at last stepped up his game in the final. Much of that credit has to go to Lendl.

Break to Federer! And I agree, **Novelty Bobble**. It’s looking dark for Murray and he looks down, but he’s been so much better here than he was in any of his other Slam finals. He’s been outstanding for most of this match, and Federer has been superlative. He just got to 15-15 with another great dropshot after being pulled from side to side on the baseline. This is remarkable stuff.

I’ll be very happy for Federer if he wins. I doubt there is a nicer guy out there and I wish him all the best. As a Brit I’d prefer Murray to win but at least he’s put up a hell of a fight.

That is so cruel, to make him have such a long interview when he is obviously distraught. Give him a cuddle for Christ’s sake.
Great win for Roger though. No doubt the greatest of all time.
