He’s been quoted as saying that he wants to compete at the next Olympics, so unless something dramatic happens, he probably won’t retire before then.
It’s seemed to me in the last few years that Roger’s biggest hurdle to winning a major is his mental focus. Sure, he’s lost half a step due to age, but he still showcases his quality even against the top guys. He just hasn’t been able to put together a long enough run, and I think it’s because he takes strange mental fugues at times. Perhaps in the past his ability has been superior enough to compensate, but now if he wants to win something big, he has to rein it in.
Nadal out of Indian Wells…as is Sharapova .
Turned on the Tennis (Sony Open from Miami) and I was shocked to see a Qtr Final matchup between Djoker and Murray. I didn’t realize that Murray had fallen out of the top 4.
Djoker wins in straight sets.
What an underwhelming men’s finale for the Sony Miami tournament. Nadal plays so defensively against Novak. And Nole played an outstanding, freakishly good game.
I felt so badly for Li Na, who was up 5-2 against Serena before Serena woke up. What a heartbreak for her.
Watching some tennis in sun soaked cities was what I needed after this loooong winter. Hoping for some great tennis, and some more breakouts a la Stan, this season.
Don’t know where Nadal was but he wasn’t ‘in’ Miami. Sad match for Nadal fans. Nole was on .
Well, GB, Germany, and Kazakhstan all came close to pulling off upset wins in the Davis Cup quarter-finals yesterday, but couldn’t quite convert their 2-1 leads. Shame GB weren’t playing at home, then we would have stuffed the Italians. What determines the home/away draw - is it based on previous record (if one exists), coin toss if the two countries have never played each other? In other words, last time GB played Italy it was in GB, so this time it was held in Italy?
Sorry for the double post but I answered my own question - I was basically right, they look back to the previous tie and as long as it was post-1970, the reverse choice applies to the current tie. See page 13 of the Davis Cup Rulebook 2014.
Off court stuff: the Federers just announced the births of Leo and Lenny, their second set of twins. Their girls, Myla Rose and Charlene, will turn five in July. Let the doubles jokes begin. On the other hand that comes right after Elena Baltacha died. She was never a big star, but she was the #1 British woman for about half of the 2000s. She retired a few months ago and had only just gotten married to her former coach when they found out she had cancer.
On the court, the French Open is less than three weeks away. It comes at an interesting time with Nadal shockingly not doing that well on clay and Djokovic struggling with wrist problems. Andy Murray seems to still be working his way back from injury, and Stan Wawrinka is still playing really well. Right now Federer leads the tour in match wins this year.
Federer’s kids are going to be an awesome mixed doubles set of teams.
Bumped for the French Open
Nadal, Djokovic, Wawrinka, Fed, Ferrer, Berdych, Murray, and Raonic top 8 seeds in the Mens Draw.
I don’t follow tennis rankings real closely but I had thought Nadal recent losing streak would have put Djoker as the #1 seed. But Rafa is seeded to meet Ferrer in the Qtrs and that probably is not a good matchup for him. Ferrer beat Rafa in Monte Carlo last month.
Serena, Na, Radwanska, Halep, Kvitova, Jankovic, Sharapova, Kerber top 8 seeds in the Women’s Draw.
Aza-shreik-a should have been seeded 5th, but WD because of a left foot issue. I won’t miss her.
Caroline Wozniacki just broke her high profile engagement with Golf star Rory McIlroy, probably doomed for a 1st round loss.
Jankovic seems like she has been around forever, but I am surprised she is still in her 20’s.
I am rooting for Sloane Stephens!
For the first time ever, both of the Australian Open champs have lost in the first round at the French: Stan Wawrinka lost to Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in four sets and Li Na lost in three to Kristina Mladenovic. There have been a couple of other isolated upsets including Dimitrov, Nishikori and Wozniacki, but Wawrinka and Li were the only ones you might’ve expected to make a really deep run. Favorites like Serena and Federer, Djokovic, and Nadal got through easily. Nadal, by the way, beat Robby Ginepri - who hadn’t played a main-draw singles match at a major since the U.S. Open in 2012, and hadn’t played in the French Open main draw since 2010. So Ginepri deserves plaudits for getting back, but of course he got Nadal and was bageled twice, winning three games total.
Thanks Marley for the update. I was wondering if anyone was interested!
I had no idea Robby Ginepri was even playing still.
Williams sisters out. Serena in less than and hour.
With Venus and Serena out (:(), I’m rooting for Sloane.
Johnson/lokoti match(2 day) was a corker! johnson in 5!
yawn Might as well give the trophy to Rafa and be done with it.
Serena’s out! What a weird tournament this is becoming.
You realize he had a pretty rough go of it this season, right? He won the last tournament on clay but didn’t do too well in the previous ones.
Yes. But, he is still head and shoulders above everyone else on this surface. Who can take him out?
