Sharapova should never have been unseeded, even if she was given a pass into the tournament. Halep should be furious.
I’m sure she is furious. There are probably some other players who would rather have played Halep, too.
But, good to see she can win without drugs. (!) Also, great dress.
Federer lost the first set tonight. Won the second and is up in the third.
Strange match. Tiafoe looked good, then not so good. Roger…is not really playing like the GOAT. Now that’s winning ugly.
Every time I think Kyrios is growing up he does something to show he isn’t.
The Thiem / Delpo match has to be one of the best of the tournament, no? I love rooting for Delpo, but this has been great no matter how it turns out.
We actually have an American man in the Quarterfinal.
And he has a real chance of making it further, even to the final. The big battle is on the other side of the draw, with Nadal, Federer, and Del Potro.
Maybe not quite the same expectation level, but I thought there were years when Ryan Harrison should have made a stronger push for the top 20.
I feel that window has now gone for him.
Given that they meet in the semis, Federer has only a 10-9 win/loss edge over Nadal on hard court. I thought the edge would’ve been bigger (while he leads Nadal 2-1 on grass, but on clay it’s 13-2 for guess who:rolleyes:).
My fellow compatriot Denis Shapovalov made a pretty darn good run for an 18 year-old. He definitely played his worst against Carreno Busta, and I’m sure DS is learning his lesson about the value of playing consistently in a tourney with best-of-five matches, which is new to him. At post-games he comports himself well, making sure to give substantial acknowledgements to the opponents, and not being too flip or glib like that Bouchard headcase. I like this comparison: Alexander Zverev (the next thing) was 69th when he was 18, while Shapovalov will be closer to 50th, pending some US Open outcomes, I believe.
And wow DS was the bookies’ fourth fave - 13 to 1 - to actually take the tourney. Which kinda surprises me, that one.
Definitely the match of the tourney so far has been Kvitova over Muguruza.
Quite uplifting.
Too bad PK didn’t meet Venus in the finals, instead of tomorrow.
US Open fans: Someone please use a drone to steal off with Brad Gilbert’s dorky hat.
Happening again.
#3 Muguruza loses in the Round of 16
#1 Pliskova loses in the Quarter finals
Despite these results Garbine Muguruza will be the highest ranked player in women’s tennis next week.
Tennis really needs to a cue from golf and start de-emphasizing dated results and emphasizing more recent results.
Or Serena needs to return from Maternity and start dominating tennis again.
Rumor has it her kid is already dominating the ITF circuit.
Once again no Fedal at the US Open. Considering all the matches they have played at the majors it is a bit strange and given where they are in their careers it might not ever happen. Now DelPotro has a chance to once again beat both players at the US Open as he did when he won it in 2009. Whatever happens, this is will be certainly an interesting ending to a grand slam season that no one was predicting at the beginning of the year (and certainly not at the end of the last one).
Keyes was on fire…what a boring match.
Is it a foot fault to start your service motion with your back foot on the “wrong” half of the court?
Watching Del Potro serve from the Deuce Court, his right foot is very close the Ad court half when he starts his motion.
His right foot is clearly in proper position when he hits the ball.
What are the odds on the Nadal-Anderson match? If Kevin Anderson wins, he’d replace Thomas Johansson as the most unlikely Grand Slam champ in the last 20 years.
Look, here is Nadal and Kevin Anderson in 1998. Together.
Gotta love it.
Federer and Nadal have now won all of this year’s Grand Slams; so, what, is it 2006 already?
Fun fact: we have now had 12 slam tournaments in a row with no new winner. (Last one was Cilic, USO 2014)
This is the longest sequence for men’s tennis in the Open Era.
ITF Rules of Tennis, Rule 18d:
“During the service motion, the server shall not touch the imaginary extension of the centre mark with either foot.”
Federer just beat Nadal in the Shanghai final.
