Four attacks in Germany in the past week. Last one was by a refugee:

> IMO, you can’t have terrorism without a movement behind it, an organization aiding or directing attacks.

The Unabomber did just fine on his own. So did Ander Breivik and Dylan Roof. No organizations required.

That’s just off the top of my head. There’s almost certainly more that I could find with a little Googling.

So, no, you haven’t made much of a point re: police shootings. Maybe think a little, or do some research before putting stuff out there?

Yeah, and when you arrest the Unabomber or shooter, that threat is ended. Whereas you stop one ISIS bomber, another takes his place as long as there is an ISIS.

Well, for that particular person, sure. But you’ll never get all the lone nutters out there.

Likewise, if it’s not ISIS, it’s al-Qaeda, or the IRA, or the Judean People’s Front or the People’s Front of Judea, or some other group with an agenda they think is aided by terror attacks. You’ll never get all the groups out there.

Labeling something as “not terrorism” because there’s no convenient group to target is dumb.

Saying that it’s more effective to target organized groups than lone nutters is not dumb.

Dumbing down the conversation for people because both thinking and real solutions are hard is rarely a good idea.

Breivik and Roof are good examples. They didn’t have an organization backing them or giving them plans, but they were both influenced by white supremacy. While targeting specific groups wouldn’t stop guys like that, there are certainly things society can do to identify disaffected youth and work on the social angle, rather than just the security/law enforcement angle.

Not so much that as “ETA itself has dissolved, the political branch barely mentions independence any more outside of rallies”.

There was an Extreme Right Wing ideology and contacts behind both Breivik and Roof. And also behind Jo Cox’s murderer. Kaczynski was a luddite-anarchist, but in this case there was no group behind his philosophy.

Much like them, the current Islamic terror attacks are not caused by people directly paid or trained by an organization, which makes them way harder to predict. So it’s the literal existence and on-going success of Isis what inspires them.

TLDR: Not so much that as “ETA itself has dissolved, the political branch barely mentions independence any more outside of rallies”. Or even in rallies. Neither do their cousins without the communist bent. There may come a time when it gets talked about again, but right now it’s “let’s just keep on working and do our best to spread official Basque” time.

Longer screed:
They’ve changed a lot of tacks from what they’d been doing pre-March 11; some of them had already been changing at that point, others have been abandoned quickly and quietly after seeing how things have gone in the Catalonian referendum (not as well as they would have liked). Back in 1970 it was relatively easy to find young people who were happy to blame all the evils of the Basque land on Franco and the police; nowadays many of the young folk are used to seeing the police as friendly and helpful and this is even more true for immigrants (even undocumented ones) than for those born locally.

Some of their policies backfired hugely, such as that one of collapsing the answers to a lot of questions into one: copying the Catalanists (for whom it’s worked well), they redefined “Basque” from “ancestry” to “must have been born here, have all ancestors from here or be terribly sorry you don’t, speak official Basque as primary language and vote/fight for us”, and made it clear that you could not identify at the same time as “Basque” and “something else”. The second part meant that a lot of Navarrese said “ok then, I’ve happily been Basque and Navarrese all my life, but if you say I can’t then I’m Navarrese” (place of birth and love of place beat ancestry, don’t they? You wouldn’t expect an American called Schmidt to love Germany over the US!). Europeists will also reject that no-dual-identity definition. Nowadays independentists of all signs have no problem with people identifying as “Basque and something else”, and you can be Basque by multiple definitions, it’s self-identification and if someone tells you you’re “no true Basque” you can laugh in their face.

There is no comparison in scale and purchase of right wing murderers compared to Islamist murderers today though. The most recent butchery in France, some teenage Islamic kids mouthing off to some 84 year old priest about how christians kill them (ignorant fool, orders of magnitude more are killed by other god damn muslims… stupid and evil and a terrible combo). He then proceeded to have the priest kneel, and slit his throat.

84 year old priest, murdered in cold blood. Would that such barbarism was isolated, it is not, and it keeps coming from the same corridors. France and Germany are having more issues because they let more muslims in. We would too if we did in the same numbers without better screening, there is nothing magical about our integration, some people just don’t integrate as well as others.

The attacks are coming daily now. Minority groups targeted in an Iraq bombing, dozens killed. UN has called it a war crime.

When all this finally ends, I hope there are people to put on trial for war crimes. We need a Nuremburg-style ending to this.

Wasn’t there an omnibus thread specifically for Islamic terrorism or did I have a bad dream? It seems to have disappeared?

Yes, started by a poster who was recently banned, and apparently subsequently removed. [Here’s a cached version](http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:s9tptjdrM6kJ:boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php%3Ft%3D799495+&cd=2&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us&client=safari) if you want to see it. But since the OP of that thread seemed to intend it to be fairly similar to this one, the Mods may have decided that we didn’t need two concurrent terrorist-attack-of-the-day threads.

Oh, that’s weird. Didn’t see any mention that the threads were merging or anything. Guess I’m not losing it, yet.
