The php tag is a varient of the code tag, which is used to ensure that things like computer code dispay correctly. Since much of this board is written in a language called php, the programmers thought it was pretty important, so created a special version of the code tag to color-code php code in what is presumably a sensible manner to anyone who knows php. Of course, if you put something other than php code into such a tag, it’ll get confused, and display who-knows-what colors.
