Recently heard variation in a super cheery voice… “Make it a nice day!!” I really wanted to say, “Piss off”. I didn’t. I just smiled, nodded, and said, “Thanks!” ---

I know a friend who, as an elementary school counselor, starts off each day with a brief lesson over the PA on character, and ends with, “Have a nice day, or not: the choice is yours!” 😃 ---

I will, however, note that **Dex** ’s post is timed at 03:52 BST which, I believe, is 21:52 in Chicago and 19:52 on the west coast. Frankly, this is a bit late to be wishing people a nice day, so in future I suggest he just says “goodnight” or “sweet dreams” or something similar. Better still, in order not to specifically exclude people who live in different time zones (Turkmenistan, North Korea, Gloucestershire, etc.) maybe he should just say, “I love you all”. ---

Only if you restrict “day” to mean exclusively the hours of light. I think he meant it in the sense that a day is a 24 hour period through which both phases of daytime and nighttime occur. There, all the ambiguity is resolved since he didn’t say “have a nice daytime”. Thus, it wouldn’t necessarily require that his comment be restricted only to that period of time. 🙂 **Shodan** , how funny. =P ---

Dear lord. If there’s anything that would have people calling out “liar!” it would be an administrator saying he/she loves us all. I don’t believe that is a standard use of “Have a nice day” in the UK, as evidenced by my postman. He actually says “Have a good day” but he says it in the morning when there is plenty of daytime remaining. I once met him on the street in the late afternoon and he didn’t say “Have a good day” or even “Have a good evening”. I have therefore formed the impression that while the postman wants me to enjoy the hours of daylight, he doesn’t give a shit what happens to me during the hours of darkness. (I keep meaning to speak to the Royal Mail about this.) I think **Dex** should come back and explain exactly what the fuck he means by making controversial statements like “Have a nice day”. ---
