This screenshot will be sent to CBC.ca to help diagnose why articles won’t preview on Discourse.

CBC.ca article:

[https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/ukraine-canada-drones-defence-russia-9.7339040](https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/ukraine-canada-drones-defence-russia-9.7339040)

Yahoo News article:

> **[Canada provides almost US$29m to support Ukrainian veterans](https://www.yahoo.com/news/world/articles/canada-provides-almost-us-29m-114700413.html?fr=sycsrp_catchall)**
>
> Canada will provide about UAH 1.29 billion (US$28.9 million) to support Ukrainian veterans and their families, as part of a new international multi-donor veterans' fund.

Edit: no further action should be required on this end so thread can be closed if needed although I will happily post updates if I receive any.

This has annoyed me for a long time, so thanks for informing the CBC folks of this deficiency. My experience has been that many small websites don’t have the proper information in their interface for Discourse to create the Onebox preview, but most major ones do. It’s surprising that this was overlooked at cbc.ca.

Huh. That is interesting. I didn’t notice any missing og meta tags. But looking at the source of the Yahoo page, I notice it has the og:image:type and the image dimensions (og:image:width and og:image:height). But surely those wouldn’t be required.

The only other thing is the addition of a data-rh property in each meta og tag. But that shouldn’t impact anything, and is common on any site that uses React.

Anyways, thought I’d post my observations here just in case they were useful. I was curious myself.

Is there some messed up localization? The headline says something about Canada providing US$, but according to the first sentence there are no US$, or CAD for that matter— they are providing UAH. Then clicking on the actual article says that they are really providing CAD (which seems to be the truth).

Have you tried asking at the Discourse Meta for help diagnosing it?

Testing

That link correctly oneboxes at the Discourse Meta:

> **[Any way to add user post count totals to posts?](https://meta.discourse.org/t/any-way-to-add-user-post-count-totals-to-posts/123726/11)**

> the one linked in the article you linked

So maybe it’s a local setting or plugins issue here, and not anything CBC could fix.

That example is from 2019, maybe something has changed since then.

Here’s a Straight Dope example from 2022 that OneBoxed properly at the time:

> [@What Scam Phone Calls Do You Get?](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/what-scam-phone-calls-do-you-get/964024/2):
>
> In Toronto we get an unending sequence of people asking if we need the air ducts cleaned in our house.

Trying it now:

[https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/offshore-telemarketers-defy-canada-s-do-not-call-list-1.1323440](https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/offshore-telemarketers-defy-canada-s-do-not-call-list-1.1323440)

And another example from 2023:

> [@Canadian Politics 2022-2023](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/canadian-politics-2022-2023/962633/379):
>
> Of course, evidence has come out in the interim.

And 2024:

> [@Do you have to explain where you got a bunch of cash](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/do-you-have-to-explain-where-you-got-a-bunch-of-cash/996033/20):
>
> I believe some jurisdictions have something called an “unexplained wealth order” where the government can require a citizen to explain where their money comes from. Not quite the same thing as a cop stopping someone on the street, though.

Moved to Site Feedback, as this is really about Discourse and not about the SDMB.
