Well I always write “spelled”. But in the past when I tried persuading the **kabbess** that she was wrong to write “spelt” and looked in the dictionary to prove it, not only did I find that _either_ spelling is correct, I found that “spelt” was down as the more usual choice! That was in Chambers British English.
