As a biased left-coast dweller, I offer an exemption for Austin. I went there earlier this year for a conference - otherwise you would have never dragged me out there. My husband has a good friend there, so he joined me and we took some vacation after the conference. It was AWESOME. We saw a decent couple bands at an outdoor venue before they unfortunately got rained out (lightning like the wrath of OG), drank great beer, had fantastic sushi, awesome barbeque and great mexican food, went to some cool shops, went to the biggest Whole Foods I’ve ever seen in my life, had an excellent massage, went to a great comic book shop and two fantastic book stores, went to my first roller derby, and sang karaoke all night long with the most enthusiastic, friendly crowd I have ever met. I had such a good time I seriously would consider moving there. It was a wonderful surprise. I can safely say my bias against Texas has been altered. Go to Austin if you ever get the opportunity. ---

Spent nine nights and three days in Austin once. Lord God Almighty, what a hoot! One night, I ended up dragging my sleeping bag from room to room, looking for someplace where the full-tilt boogie wasn’t. Room after room, nothing but revelers, and all manner of chemical and sexual indulgence. (“Mamma told me not come…”) Long about 6:30 am, saw a couple cars pulling away. “Party over?” I asked, hope triumphing over experience. “Naw. Runnin’ low on beer. Time to make a run to the Piggly Wiggly.” I’m older now, wouldn’t have been, had I stayed. Dead, but still grinning. ---

**Luc** , even your old hometown has improved significantly, although it still has light years to go before it can even be mentioned in the same breath as Austin with regard to anything other than a shared highway. What we need is for you to bring the good things learned from Minnesota back here and fresh-start a new town. Nipples, Texas has a nice ring to it, don’t you think? We’ll have welcome visitors like **Ghanima** and those chiming in above and you’ll be responsible for determing what legends are depicted in statues bronze and, of course, all matters of textbook selection. ---

Move back to Waco? The Athens on the Brazos? Neighborhoods kinda gone downhill, hasn’t it? What with all that riff-raff moving to Crawford, and all. Besides, leave all this behind? Ten degrees with eight inches of snow on the ground. I think its eight inches, not sure, but have a real handy way to check, hold the phone… (Step, step, step, slam! “Jesus Christ Almighty, that’s _cold!_” Slam! step, step, step…) Yep. Eight inches. ---

I went to the Willie Nelson 4th of July Picnic in Kerrville way way back in the day. Austin was home base (For the trip. We were travelling from N.C.) It was a Southern slice of heaven. ---

I’m starting to miss Texas from time to time; I think it has something to do with some food related comments in another thread. And the Bar-B-Que reference in this one. Sometimes I actually think about going back to Texas, possibly to retire there. Then something like this comes along and by God, I rally. ---
