Good heavens! My rates are just under £1000 / year, with a 25% discount because I’m single. And I’m in an averagely priced house.
That’s only because your community was one of those that had such high tax increases in the early '80s that the voters instituted Proposition 2-1/2 (any town in the state can only raise net taxes 2-1/2% per year unless the voters approve an override). Come down southcoast way where we never raised taxes before Prop 2-1/2, so they’ve stayed low for the past 25 years. That and you’ll only get an override out of our cold, dead hands.
Of course, now we have to pay-per-bag to throw away our trash, most of our streetlights have been turned off, all town departments had their budgets cut 15%, and three years ago we nearly voted ourselves into bankruptcy. But we’ve still got low taxes, baby!
Assessed ~$270k, combined town and water district tax ~$2400/year
