Rooves, I’d like to thank you for your correcting me on my behavior in a pit thread dealing with [moderator bias](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=208248&highlight=rooves).
As the person who answered **[“Unga bunga . . . my balls itch . . . when is the comb going to be invented”](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=199985&perpage=50&highlight=rooves&pagenumber=1)** to a thread querying what pre-colonial America was called by its inhabitants, your sensitivity to issues of bias is clearly impressive.
Your attention to the niceties of SDMB protocol is equally impressive. Upon being warned in another recent thread by Lynn Bodoni: **[“This is called ‘trolling’, or ‘being a jerk.’ Do it again and you’re banned,”](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=205601&perpage=50&highlight=rooves&pagenumber=2)** you gave the definitive explanation that **[“But trolling and being a jerk are two different things,”](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=206463&highlight=rooves)** and then kindly pointed out that Lynn should be more **["objective and professional."](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=206463&highlight=rooves)**
When Coldfire requested that you try **[“reading the boards a bit more, and posting less”](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=206463&perpage=50&highlight=rooves&pagenumber=2)** you put him in his place so thoroughly that he responded with: **["And you expect them to leave that comment unchallenged? I’d say you have a steep learning curve ahead of you."](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=206463&perpage=50&highlight=rooves&pagenumber=2)**
Coming from a person so knowledgeable, experienced, and sensitive to both issues of bias and conduct on the SDMB as you are, I am grateful that you have taken the time show me the error of my ways.

Dear **Bland** ros,
Wow, how long have you been waiting to use _that_ word? I had to look that baby up! I don’t have an obsession with excrement or obscenity so I don’t understand how it applies to me. But it still is a nice word.
Why is it ok to insult a person’s intellect but not their user name? Get a grip buddy! You can call me “assholish” but I have to insult you back on YOUR terms? They’re both degrading thus equally offensive.
Give me a legitimate answer and I’ll consider not doing it.

Outside of the Pit, it is _not_ okay to insult a person’s intellect. That may be the source of your confusion. Or at least a small tributary thereto.

I wouldn’t say that it’s “Ok” to insult a person’s intellect, but, in some cases, it may seem to be a definsible position to take. Consider, for example, some one who posts something provably wrong. and, in the face of evidence that their position is in error, they do the internet equivalent of sticking their fingers in their ears and chanting ‘nannana boo boo’?
I’d suggest that it’d be fairly accurate to call that person’s intellect into question.
RE: insulting someone’s user name - well, frankly that’s always just struck me as juvenile, grade school humor as it were. and while it may not be against the rules or anything, I _generally_ lower my opinion of the person resorting to those tactics.

Apparently, **Rooves** , you’re still missing the point that I’ve seen other dopers seeking to impart:
We don’t expect you to agree with everything posted, all that is asked is behavior in an adult fashion with your responses. Is it so difficult to focus on disagreement with the point, and not digress into name-calling and an attack on the person?
Granted, it is The Pit, but that should not be taken as an excuse to seek the lowest common denominator.

**Rooves** - you just have to stop being so defensive; it’s not the end of the world if you don’t win every battle (keeping it all in perspective, we’re on a message board, albeit the finest one around). Learn to walk away from arguments. That’s my advice, whether you want it or not. I still think you have the ability to contribute to the SDMB, but after two Pittings in one month, you need to stop, take a deep breath, and consider continuing on with a new course of action.

Muffin is citing examples that were in threads Mostly created by me. There’s a big difference between that and interfering in someone elses thread for the sole purpose of insulting them.

Blonde , I’m not trying to win any battle. I wasn’t trying to start trouble by what I said. I was trying to be constructive.
In that thread, those involved were working out their issue in a civilized manner. How does going in there and throwing around insults help the point of the thread? It doesn’t. It’s hostile.
I never entered into ANY thread and insulted another member (with the exception of Libertarians "criticize me” thread because he wanted to know what people thought about him. I obliged.)
It is Muffin who seems to do this. Muffin went into two of my threads and insulted me without provocation and the one we’re talking about now. That’s THREE more than me THAT I KNOW OF.
Insults are insults but can’t anyone discriminate between what’s appropriate for THAT thread?

**Rooves,** you have to trust the system - evil folks don’t last long on the SDMB, so it’s not worth your effort to get into arguments that result in a poster Pitting you. If they shouldn’t be here, they will eventually be asked to leave. Just chill, man! I will admit to posting more than one spiteful comeback to a poster who disagreed with me or was rude, but I regret those. You’ll catch more bees with honey, if you catch my drift.
