Where has anyone agreed with you that they’ve beaten sniping software using a service that notifies you that you’ve been outbid? If you think you could have beat someone using a sniping service had you received a message via your app, why did you say this:
Again, who else besides you says they have beaten sniping software via getting a message saying they’ve been outbid?
Bo, I guarantee you this.
If we assume the push notification is working properly and sends you a notification within the same second that you were outbid (and it doesn’t)
And if we assume that you’re sitting there with your iphone out, staring at it and waiting for that notification (which you weren’t)
And we assume that you can clear out the push notification, load up the eBay page, type in the new bid you want (don’t make a typo!), load that into the system, then reconfirm your new bid on a new page all in five seconds…
you STILL won’t have enough time to outsnipe the sniper. Even with every possible thing working in your favor. You’d lose. And if you argue differently then your version of the world is radically different than the one everyone else plays in or you’re knowingly lying to us because you refuse to admit what you should have done to begin with: bid what your max bid on this auction was and be done!
When I first started shopping on eBay, I was amazed at all the things that I wanted. However, I soon learned that almost everything that I wanted was NOT unique, that it would be offered again sooner or later. I just had to determine how much I was really willing to pay for the item. For instance, I paid $25 for a glass coin bank shaped like an owl when I first started shopping, because I kept logging in and checking the bids. I later paid about $10 for another one which is substantially like it…though I’d bid on half a dozen or so, I had determined that I wasn’t going to pay more than $10 (before shipping) for another coin bank like that. And guess what? Sooner or later, one came up for sale, and most people who were in the market for one of those either didn’t see this one, or didn’t care to place a bid on it, and I won it.
I kept upping my bid when I watched the items I was bidding on. This told me that I needed to determine my maximum price without the pressure.
Yeah, sniping can get you some items at a good price. But frankly, I don’t buy so much on eBay any more, and I’m not going to play that game. I know, or I’m willing to decide, my absolute max, and I’ve just about always been able to get what I want by putting in my max bid a day or so before the auction ends, and that’s good enough for me.
