I’ve lurked here off-and-on over the years, but I never got around to joining the board until now. Mostly because I didn’t feel like I had much to contribute. I’m a middle-aged, middle-America, straight, white guy; a computer programmer; kind of liberal; indifferent to religion. My point of view is already over-represented on the internet. I do, however, feel like I need to say thank you to all of the posters who have shared their stories. Reading comments from people who have different life experiences than me helps me stay aware of my biases and helps me continue to fight my ignorance. In addition to the viewpoints, thank you for all of the facts I have learned here as well. The Straight Dope motto has always hit a little too close to home for me - yes, I know it’s taking longer than you thought, but I’m doing the best I can. So, thank you to all of you for all that you do. (Try typing that five times fast). Keep up the good fight because, however slowly, it is working on some of us. ---
