There are many poster on the left that I might expect such sentiments from but you’re not one of them.

That is a very strong comparison you’ve made.

It’s not compatible with the opinion I have of you.

Then maybe you should give some serious thought to the notion that the comparison might well be apt.

But if I’m following along at home correctly, you can’t blame the abstinence program (which provides no info on birth control or STDs–at least not at my HS); you must blame the sexual revolution which occurred 30+ years ago, long before these kids were even thought of.
It has nothing to do with the ever increasing sexualization of our culture and the explosion of porn online nationwide, including those Godfearing red states or the --well, hell, I’m no longer sure… maybe it’s the breakdown of the family thanks to those damned feminists getting jobs, so now no supervision at home; no more family dinner–yep, it’s mom’s fault for that, not dad’s for not making enough to allow her stay home… Janet Jackson displayed her nipple ring on TV and corrupted an entire generation of kids right then and there and Clinton had a blowjob, which is just ridiculous–blowjobs are for guys who can’t get laid. Everyone knows that…

It’s something. And it’s bad. And it’s liberal. And it’s their fault.

Color me 😕. Maybe if teens were taught about sex and taught its inherent dangers and risks, they’d make better decisions some of the time? Just another crazy idea of mine.

> Where did I say rap music was a primary reason? It’s merely an offshoot of what has happened since the 50s. And where did I say liberals ‘championed’ it? I clearly said they defended it. Not the same thing.

Explain to me, using small words, the difference. Or are you splitting hairs with me? I think you are. And yes, liberals defend rap music, like, um, Tipper Gore? Who exactly?

> [@](#):
>
> No, it isn’t. Many people, me among them, were castigated instantly for questioning the notion that women could do such jobs. Time has since shown that they can, and that’s fine. But many people who were in favor of women having these opportunities but unsure how they could fulfill them were instantly cast as ‘male chauvinist pigs’.

What? Why is this a “liberal” response, to be offended at the suggestion that women can’t be cops? Why isn’t it a female response? Or a fair minded response? It seems like everything you disagree with is a “liberal” response and therefore wrong. Women can be cops… so why are you arguing that people who said otherwise were somehow the victims in this situation?

> [@](#):
>
> Maybe, though I’ve never heard that to be the case. But that isn’t the point. Again, facts are facts and honesty is the best policy. If they are better athletes, that’s all there is to it, whether they want that acknowledged or not.

Was there controversy about saying black people are better athletes? No, what actually happened is that someone (Jimmy the Greek, I think it was) said that black people were better athletes because white people bred them to be that way. THAT is what people found offensive. If you’re going to use this as an example, at least be honest about the nature of the controversy.

> [@](#):
>
> The way to deal with the ignorance that may follow is to meet that ignorance head-on with facts to disprove it; not to pretend it doesn’t exist and call people names when they perfectly reasonably contend that it’s so.

Honestly, you are getting pretty incoherent here. What facts are being debated? Who is using facts and who isn’t? What facts are at issue? What the hell are you talking about here?

> [@](#):
>
> I NEVER SAID WOMEN SHOULDN’T BE COPS! In fact I’m in favor of it. However, what I did say was just perfectly borne out by you, i.e. one can’t even raise a perfectly legitimate question about it without having their motives impuned.

I did not impugn your motives. I expressed incredulity that you think that the POV “women can’t be cops” deserves fair treatment as a valid POV. It’s not. It’s ridiculous. Do I have to respect even the most idiotic, and yes, sexist assumptions? No, I don’t (note, I’m not saying YOU are sexist, only the people who said, “Women can’t be cops” and obstructed their progress in doing so). I can dismiss them freely and without reservation. And I do. What you seem to want is respect for your archaic and absurd views regardless of how far afield from reality and justice they are. You’re not going to get it. I won’t call you names, but I’m not going to do what you want, which is agree with you.

> [@](#):

No, in fact, all the name-calling in this exchange has been done by YOU, so  right back atcha, buster.

> No, I’ll accuse you of dishonesty (barring, of course, your dishonest appraisal of what I actually did say by the comment just above) if you, like many liberals I know, actually disapprove of rap music but feel obligated to defend it because you don’t want to think of yourself as racist…or perhaps even if you don’t mind it and you accuse others of racism because they don’t like it.

Not liking it is one thing. Saying it’s an actual social ill, a bad thing, a problem… that’s something else. I actually do happen to like it, even the stuff you think is evil, but I don’t think disliking it makes you racist. Saying it’s evil and a problem in society? I’ll call you ignorant and say maybe this part of black people’s culture and their expressions of anger scare you. And that’s actually YOUR problem, not theirs or society’s. There has to be room in the public discourse for expressions that are angry, even hurtful, graphic, and discomfitting. It can’t be all sunshine and puppies, and I for one don’t want it to be because that would be… wait for it… DISHONEST.

> [@](#):
>
> More dishonesty. I didn’t say you actually ‘yelled’ it, I said you mischaracterized my comments so as to give you a basis for doing so, something which many others of your political persuasion have been doing for decades.

If I were creating a basis for doing so, but then never actually did so… aren’t you just whining and calling names again? And being DISHONEST by accusing me of having motives not in evidence?

> [@](#):
>
> My point was that the blacks I knew and worked around and saw out and about when I was in the part of town where they lived seemed to be living a perfectly normal life; many were happy, funny, cool, and fun to be around. Others simply went through their jobs and daily routine in the very same manner that whites did in the areas where they lived.

My god. So the fact that they were not shouting, gnashing their teeth, and miserable 100% of the time means that it wasn’t as bad as everyone says it was? And that being oppressed and wanting change should mean that you can’t possibly be happy, funny, cool, and fun to be around? How ridiculous. I bet even enslaved people manage all those things because people do tend to make the best of whatever situation they’re in. That doesn’t mean that the injustice they suffered isn’t as bad as everyone says. It just shows that you are being willfully ignorant so that you can cling to your erroneous idea that the past was so much better than now. Only in the rosy glow of your selective memory it is.

> [@](#):
>
> But they weren’t living lives of abject misery like has been characterized in this thread.

Define abject misery. I mean, not being able to get the education, employment, or medical care that white people get, living in poverty, not being allowed agency in government of your own country, being treated like a lower form of human, not allowed to marry whomever you want, and living in fear that a biased society would allow or condone harm to you… I mean, that’s as close to abject misery as I’d like to live.

> [@](#):
>
> (And in fact, given the state of society now, I’d bet that what with gangs, drugs, crime, etc. – all of which I believe have flourished under the liberal-dominated society that has existed since the late-sixties – many of them would feel that life in those areas was much better then.

On what basis are you saying that American society since the last 60’s was a “liberal-dominated society”? Please, be concrete. Because I’d have to disagree. I lived through the Reagan administration and both Bushes, and I don’t see it.

I have.

The Klan consisted of a group that lost power, suffered, became bitter about it, and and found a subset of their own population to blame, target and attack with hate speech and violence. They were cowards and they wore masks to maintain their anonymity because they didn’t dare put their real faces to their deeds.

It’s a good comparison all right, just not with Republicans. It much better fits the left wing nutjob fringe here on this message board: Bitter because they’re out of power, targetting a subset of their own population with hatred, attacking anonymously.

I’m disapointed to see so many folks succumbing to it and the ranks swelling.
Thank you. Giving it some thought was a good idea.

I disagree quite heavily with this. It’s perfectly possible to see both sides of an honest argument. What we have had in this country for the last 8 years is not an honest argument.

I think I understand your point but when you talk to a conservative about any individual issue, you can not get them to think outside of their world view. at least I can’t get them to see anything beyond the “talking points”

I do not think a conservative can debate the liberal position in a serious manner.
I do think a liberal can debate as a conservative.

I think the conservative position is much simpler then the liberal position. There is much more nuance to the liberal position.

Of course, these are my world views and ymmv

You and my friend Jesco have a lot in common and what he said was:
"That’s right boy. Yer basic conservative, why he’s just like yer basic nigger. Ya can’t get a nigger to see anything beyond his nigger world view.

I don’t think a nigger can talk to a white man in a serious fashion. I do think a white can can talk to a nigger.

Nigger’s are much simpler than white men. There is much more nuance to whites.

No?

Hmmm…rates of Syphilis infections since 1941 - steadily dropping. There are ~1/4 the cases now as there was in the 1950’s.

Rates of gonorrhea did peak in the 1970’s, but then dropped off again an are currently comparable to the late 1940’s.

Rates of Chlamydia now - those have indeed exploded.

The main STD reported in the study on teenagers ( 615 of them, including 18-19 year olds, technically legal adults ) is not any of the above, but rather HPV which typically isn’t tracked as thoroughly. Which far as I can tell means we have no idea how prevalent it is now vs. earlier decades. Also they weren’t ST **D** ’s, but ST **I** ’s - i.e. infections, not disease. 90% of HPV infections never reach disease level, but are instead suppressed by the bodies immune system within a year or two without ever showing symptoms. Also also, that was a study specifically of _sexually active_ teenagers, not random teenagers. It doesn’t speak at all to the real rate of STI’s in the female teenage population. That study also had a RSE of 30% which is on the edge of unreportable.

The reason I bring racism into the equation is because the only thing that distinguishes your attitude towards conservatives from Jesco’s towards niggers is the target of your hatred.

The rhetoric you both use is the same. You are the same.

If conservatives believe in personal responsibility, then how and why do they blame liberals for the state of things? If you believe that abstinence education is the way to go, how is the sexual revolution to blame for your teen son coming home and telling you his girlfriend is pregnant? Are modern girls just tramps now? Are teen boys randier than previous generations?

If rap music corrupts and creates rancor (and don’t get me wrong, I think some of that music is misogynistic as hell and rather disgusting), shouldn’t there be more rioting in the streets and more black on white crime? And what of all those middle class white teens who listen to rap? Who are they railing against? Will we start to see generational hate crime–take down the old farts?
I’m truly puzzled but am losing interest. It’s no fun to be one guy against 12 or so like this thread, so this soft-hearted liberal feels some compunction (plus, I hate shouting). But I will say my patience is wearing thin. You can’t just pick out social issue of the week and blame America’s ills on it–that is what Papa Bear and Rush do. It’s shoddy thinking, bad politics and leads to poor communication.

Not all do. For the ones that do, just because they beleive something doesn’t mean they are capable of living up to it. Flaws, human nature, hypocrisy. Take your pick.

I think it’s hardly unique to conservatives to look for outside sources to blame for their own misfortunes. We didn’t invent the scapegoat, you know. Again, human nature.

I think the biggest negative effect is people finishing sentences with “yo.” I take that back. Here in rural PA, there is a Christian kid’s rap group I saw at a fair:

“Jesus is the son of God, yo!”
“Every homey in the hood, he know!”
“God loves us, spread it to and fro!”

Little hayseed trying to beat box in the background.

The biggest problem I have with Rap is that they’re not doing enough to police their own, otherwise they would have sent Coolio to pop a cap in these kids’ cracker asses for the good of all humanity, yo.

I don’t have any attitude towards conservatives. You are imagining yourself the victim and some how you have created a world where you are just like a victim of racism.

You seriously need to stop feeling persecuted - you are imagining people are against you when they are not. People are disagreeing with your positions and your political ideas because they feel the world would be better off if “we” went in a different way and had a different belief system.

> …PS: Hiya, **Red**! Good to see you, sir. Congratulations on winning EM: ya’ll played some brilliant football…

Thank you young man. I was beginning to think I’d go to the grave without getting such a huge satisfaction. I mean it wasn’t just the win, but as you well point out, _the way_ we went about it. Modesty aside, it’d been a loong time since I’d seen a side play so consistently well from top to bottom and from day one to the Final – Italy’s match, is, of course, no point of reference for Calcio is not football. Yet we managed to overcome that too. Got me the two proudest Spanish shirts ever, both the red and the gold. Frame them I will.

On other matters, more than glad to have you back. Needless to say, you speak for me (only much better) 99% of the time. On that note I can’t but wonder why we even bother anymore…

All the best to you and yours,

**Hentor** , thank you, but as you surely realize, “arguing” with these ditto-heads/maketheirownreality simplentons is simply an exercise in futility.

Your odds would improve exponentially doing so with a pig. Even if you well know what they say about that…

As concerned as I am for the future of your nation (and my son’s) I really do think that at this point in time it’s all about destiny – for good or for bad, facts have become largely irrelevant to the majority of dogmatic Republicans.

Having said that, I truly do hope that you, as a nation, have enough sense left to avoid going down the drain with McSame…because if not…well, you know that as well.

Nobody’s claiming victimhood. I’m not persecuted. You’ve got it backwards.

I’m just saying your attitudes towards conservatives are identical to a racist’s towards blacks, and just as despicable.

You seriously think we are only capable of seeing one worldview, or that it is impossible for us to communicate with the subtlety and nuance of a liberal?

Trust me. Your attitude isn’t so subtle.

I’m not the victim. The person you are demeaning and degrading with your attitudes is yourself.
