# Thanksgiving - Post your menu.

For the 26th year in a row, we are camping in the Mojave for Thanksgiving. The menu for Thursday will be:
Shrimp cocktail as an appetizer
Turkey - probably deep-fried
Cornbread stuffing
Hot pea salad
Sweet potatoes
Gravy
Cranberry sauce
A nice selection of wines, primarily Pinot Noir from Fess Parker
Pie - Pumpkin, of course
Afters - Cognac or Grand Marnier
All prepared on camp stoves and camp fire.

Turkey-my favorite meat.
Stuffing
mashed potatoes with copious butter
cranberry sauce
corn
salad(new recipe I found, raw potatoes marinated in dressing then add tomatos, cucumbers, beans.)

Rosemary roasted turkey
Smashed redskin potatoes w/ garlic
Frenchbread stuffing/dressing w/ mushrooms, leeks, and “turkey” “sausage” (vegetarian for my veggo brother)
Green beans with candied almonds and dried cranberries
Glazed roasted sweet potatoes
For gravy I’m making a stock with bones from a turkey I made a few weeks ago and reducing that and then gravyizing it. Pan gravy is always too hectic.
Sister is making a greek salad
Grandma is bringing between 2 and 277 pies.
I always put a bunch of effort into the cranberries and my sister and I are always the only ones who ever eat them, so this year I just bought some canned organic cranberry sauce.

It’s just me, my husband and my 14-year-old son, so I’m trying to figure out how to make small quantities to I don’t end up with an unmanageable mountain of leftovers. My goal this year was to make things I never make.
Cherry Pineapple Salad (a standard for my husband’s family, but I never make it)
Salt-roasted turkey (a fresh locally-raised turkey, not a frozen one)
Succotash (my son’s request)
Hazelnut, sage and mushroom dressing (it was always cornbread dressing in my family)
Green Bean Casserole – yes, that one. I never make it.
Scalloped Oysters – OK, I usually do make these.

I agree that there is no such thing as too much leftover turkey. Club sandwiches…mmmmmm!
But the rest of it? “We can freeze it and use it later!” The road to Hell is paved with good intentions and the mystery frozen hockey pucks exhumed when I clean the freezer in June.

Honeybaked Ham
Cornbread Dressing with chicken (one heavy sage, one light)
Sweet Potato Casserole
Green Bean Casserole
Corn Pudding
Coleslaw
Deviled Eggs
Honey Wheat Bread
Pumpkin Pie
Pecan Pie
Orange Cranberry Compote.
That’s it so far, there’s usually a few last minute additions. It’s always way too much food.

We always go to [Bourbon Street Bar and Grill](http://www.bourbonstbkk.com/), as do many, many others. Owned and operated by a New Orleans native, and there are always lots of Cajun variations. A darned good feed.

i love cole slaw. maybe i’ll add that. my sister likes lima beans but i LOATHE them. Succotash does sound interesting though. i’m debating a pecan pie. apparently my sister doesn’t remember ever having pecan pie ever (a deliberate, heinous, and disgusting lie).

I’m bringing chocolate chip cookies. Last year I brought a lemon roll, but I’m not making the extra effort this year, because of the glut of deserts last year.
The rest will be there when we get there.

Ambrosia (fruit salad)
Crescent rolls
2-layer pumpkin pie
All comfort foods–this isn’t the time for us to try “new” recipes! It’s just the 2 of us, but I managed to find a small (11 lb) turkey, so there will still be leftovers. Notice–no cranberry sauce. We both admitted that as long as it was just us, we don’t have to have it. We both hate it!

I am in a similar position except it is me, my husband, my 20 year old (single) son and my 13 year old daughter. The goal is to have at least one dish each one likes since none of us seem to like the same things, without having tons of leftovers that no-one will eat. I am still planning [Hey! I still have all day to decide, right?] but so far I have:
Turkey (a compromise because husband really wanted a ham instead)
Cranberry Sauce (canned because I am the only one who will eat it anyway)
Green Bean Casserole (for husband and he is the only one who will eat it)
Green Beans (Fresh- boiled the southern way for everyone else)
Mashed potatoes/Gravy
Twisty Bread (my family’s name for a particular braided yeast bread that everyone likes)
Fruit salad (berries, pineapple, peaches, etc. all tossed together; nothing fancy)
This year my daughter has asked for Pretzel Salad which I have never made but she apparently ate at her step-grandmother’s house. I hope the recipe I found is the one she wants.
And of course Pumpkin Pie with (real, handmade) whipped cream
