My bestest girlfriend bought a 3 CD for ten bucks called 70’s Rock. It really should be called 70’s schlock 'cause it’s 36 story songs from that really BIG decade. These songs are so bad, they’re good. I never laughed so hard at singers being earnest.

So, who wants to guess the song from the story? Extra points if you can guess the singer(s)!

1.White people really screwed over Native Americans. We’re gonna come back and get you!

2.My father died when I was 12. If wanted to eat I had to grow it myself. But the crops got washed away. And then my mother died.

1. Us 'n our dog go from Georgia to LA stealing other people’s stuff to live. It was so much fun we wanna do it again.

2. I wait for my grandmother at the train station (apparently after an old fashioned revival) smoking a joint.

3. Some guy said something nasty to my girl, so I killed him. Now I miss you terribly, even while the police surround me.

4. Al Capone starts a riot. The whole family waits on pins and needles for Dad.

Right on all counts **Euty**.

I have to say that I laughed out loud when I listened to Indiana Wants Me. Does that make me a bad person?

Oh, and I hate, _hate, **hate** _ Patches. What an awful, over-the-top, maudlin song. Yeech.

4 is still open. How 'bout a few more?

1. I like summer. I go out with girls and fish and swim.

2. I don’t care that you have money. I’m not going out with you.

3. (This song has to _got_be about Ted Bundy). Watch out for the guy who likes to go up to women and chat them up and get them into his apartment.

_One toke over the line, sweet Jesus
One toke over the line.
Sittin dowtown at the railway station

BTW, what is it with the nanana’s? Every other song has a nanana chorus.

I have to admit that your “trivia” clues for what I consider extremely well-known songs – akin to a trivia question of “What animated TV show featured a man named Homer, his wife Margie and his children Bart, Lisa, and Maggie?” – makes me think you have led a very sheltered life to date. (When you get to the 60s, you might be interested in a major group of that period, known as “the Beatles”.) Anyway, with respect to your question:

Fred Bronson’s _Billboard Book of Number One Hits_ has an entry for Steam’s “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye”. Included is an interview with one of the writer’s, Paul Leka, who reported “I started writing while I was sitting at the piano going ‘na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na’ . . . Everything was ‘na na’ when you didn’t have a lyric.”

I suppose it would be true if I was buying records and listening to this stuff during the 70’s. Plus, you didn’t answer any of these easy questions. Surely you didn’t just pop into this thread to insinuate that I’m – I don’t know-- stupid, did you?

Not that I’m offended or anything.

Nothing of the sort. It’s just that these songs are still being played to death by the oldies stations, so the fact that you apparantly have never heard them before is likelyan indication that you have better taste than the rest of us.

Which are listened to by people who were listening to this junk originally. They are only well known by those who haven’t kept up. While I vaguely remember some of the songs from then and many more from the 80s, I try to keep up with current music so I don’t get as stale as Muskrat Love. I knew the One Toke Over the Line song but the rest eluded me. And I’m proud of that fact.

Oh, I’ve heard _of_ these most of these songs. I even remeber singing some of them when I was little. But now I’m actually _listening_ to them.

The (supposed) fun of the thread is guessing and remembering. And perhaps adding a few for others to guess if you are so inclined. BTW, you still haven’t guessed any of the open ones.

1. Yeup
2. Nope
3. Yeup

More clues (I did say this 3 cd set had 36 songs in it)

1. Terrific base riff ruined by insipid lyrics about a woman with recessive eye-color gene.

2. Smarmy guy gets over love affair by deciding not to give a shit.

3. Sex with a Middle Eastern guy.
8 is still open.

Number 10 could only be “Green-Eyed Lady” by Sugarloaf.

Just guessing at number 11, but is it “My Life” by Billy Joel?

I stumbled across this thread later than I would have liked, **Biggirl** , but as one who remembers the music from those days, I can assure you that I’m having fun!

Green-eyed Lady is correct.

Nothing as good as Billy Joel on these CDs.

P.S. I think the songs are a hoot. If I could find the set for 10 bucks, I’d buy it.

1. _I’m Not Gonna Let It Bother Me Tonight_ Atlanta Rhythm Section

2. _Midnight at the Oasis_ Maria Muldaur

</div>

Right on Midnight At The Oasis, **Labdad** , but not the one I’m thinking of on 11. Here’s more.

1. My teenaged mom used to sing me to sleep.

2. You know you want me, I don’t know who you’re trying to fool.

3. Remember when we were outcast geeks in Junior High? We belong together.
More hints on the outstanding ones:

4. I don’t care that you have money, I’m not going out with you. I’ve seen how badly you treated the other girls you vain, conceited man.

5. Smarmy guy gets over failed love affair by deciding not to give a shit. One smarmy guy who sings other, equally smarmy songs. According to Dave Barry, the singer is pretty high up there on the smarmometer.

</div>

That hint helps. Number 8 must be Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain.”

As for number 11, is it something by Barry Manilow? Now _that’s_ high on the smarmometer!

Could number 13 be “Rock 'n Roll Lullabye”? Can’t remember the artist, though. B.J. Thomas?

I think number 15 would have to be Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons’ “My Eyes Adored You.”

</div>

Rock and Roll Lullaby by BJ Thomas is absolutely correct.
This compilation does not include anyone as good as Carly Simon or Frankie Valle.

Barry Manilow does not hit as high on the smarmometer as this artist only because-- I’m admitting this here in confidence-- I like some of Barry’s songs. I don’t think this artist had any hits after the 70s.
