With one offhand remark, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson left European diplomats befuddled at a gathering in Italy.

“Why should U.S. taxpayers be interested in Ukraine?” Tillerson asked foreign ministers discussing Russia’s intervention there at a Group of Seven gathering Tuesday in Lucca, Italy.

I’m not prepared to be as scornful in that department; I feel as though my party failed its own people. We had chance after chance to select a Rubio, a Kasich, a Bush – perhaps unpalatable to you, but hopefully you’d agree each of them are well within political norms. We didn’t provide what they were looking for; they didn’t trust. And of course, Mrs. Clinton had her own issues of trust on the other side of the aisle. I feel as though many people must have voted for Trump out of desperation, not approbation.

I hope that’s true, anyway.

I also hope it’s true. And I agree with what you’ve said- any of those would have been out of sync with my views but perfectly reasonable as choices. As people.

I’ve said many times that I don’t think a populist, nativist president is the end of the world. Polices and popular views ebb and flow. But Trump’s demeanor, temperament, and frankly clear lack of intellect is the problem. BUT, and this is the frustrating part, the people I know who support him don’t accept when I say that. That is, they are convinced I just don’t like him because he’s a Republican (which I try to explain he ain’t…)

Unfortunately, there seems to be a solid 25% of this country who, irrespective of party, just don’t think at all.
