You know the voice…a guy who tries to sound like his testicles weigh 19 pounds each. They are always hawking some race car/wrestling event. Why? I mean, who in the hell really talks like that? And who are they trying to impress - other than some geeky 12 year old boys? ---

There is actually a semi-serious answer to this question. Voices for ads are carefully chosen, depending on the message the advertiser wants to send. Supermarkets, particularly those that cater to families, will use a maternal-sounding voice. Racing appeals primarily to males, so they’ll use what they think is a hyper-masculine voice. Some people do have the smooth n’ smarmy Top-40 voice, and they use it all the freakin’ time. It’s almost a habit, really. Robin ---

I actually have that kind of voice, and while women looove it over the phone the novelty of it is fairly limited in person, and voice recognition (411 etc) software has a tough time understanding you. ---

Well I have the same voice… but I’m only 160 lbs… I sound much tougher than I appear. = P I guess that is why I like this OP. ---

I have that voice, too, and I use it for a living (not the “Sunday, Sunday, Sunday!” tone, but there’s no mistaking me for anything but a guy). Sad to say, not a single woman has ever flocked toward me for it. Or a married one, either. You want a deep voice? My supervisor at work makes me sound like a little girl. ---

Not exactly what you were talking about… but I was always under the impression that there are voice modulators that most radio stations use. These can smooth out a voice and make it more pleasant (or annoying, i suppose) Combine this with the low frequency broadcasts and you have some pretty similar sounding guys on the radio.
