Semi-random wandering around Wiki led me to the page for [currywurst](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Currywurst), which just sounds horrible to me. And now I want one!

Ever have anything like that happen to you? See a food that is just all sorts of wrong and immediately hunger for it?

currywurst is great stuff.

Quality german sausage doused in a spicy curry sauce and dusted in curry powder (or smoky paprika…i’ve had both) serve with fries and a beer. Proper post-pub food (or Christmas market with a gluhwein)

There’s a little hole-in-the-wall place in the East Village on First Ave called Wechsler’s that specializes in currywurst (and similar German fare). I wasn’t hugely impressed w/ the currywurst, but it went all right with a Radeburger–certainly nothing I’d classify as gross at all.

Honest question - what makes it sound gross? I don’t particularly like currywurst but it seems a very ordinary, regular type of food.

Is it the fried sausage? The tomato based sauce? The curry powder? Together it tastes a bit like a “poor man’s goulash”.

What I really dislike is the current macho fad of eating the currywurst impossibly hot. Many fast food joints and trucks offer a variety of hotter and hotter chili essences up to near lethal variants with a few fantastillions scovilles. Pure posturing, IMO.

We make currywurst here in the US all the time, but it doesn’t compare to one bought hot off the grill in a German park…

Currywurst is pretty much the only time I’ll eat any kind of sausage with ketchup. So I can understand your revulsion. But, otherwise, it’s pretty pedestrian–just smoked sausage with curry ketchup, and a little extra curry powder to boot. It’s easy enough to make at home. ETA: Dammit, now _I_ want some.

The ketchup was the first thing, but the clincher is the curry. I really, really don’t like curry. But so many people love the dish that I feel compelled to try it at least once.

Oh, well, if you don’t like curry, as in curry powder, then I can’t see you liking this. I mean, it’s still mostly ketchup, but it has the unmistakable taste of curry powder–that’s what makes the dish (and the ketchup palatable to me.)

I didn’t know that was the definition of currywurst. The locally-made currywurst I get at our farmer’s market has the curry powder actually in the sausage. They grill up heavenly. But I like curry, so YMMV.

I like currywurst, too, but I didn’t know the recipe was that simple. I have a big bottle of curry ketchup in the fridge, that I’ve been using on Tater Tots.

Anyhow, as to the OP, there’s nothing on my list right now, but I’ve certainly been drawn to certain foods based on a curiosity of “how exactly do those flavors work out.” One recent success was the Swedish dish, [the Flying Jacob](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flying_Jacob), a casserole made of chicken, cream, peanuts, bananas, and bacon.

One that didn’t work out so well is a tuna casserole from the 1936 Chicago Tribune. Here is just the list of ingredients:

> [@](#):
>
> Sweet-Sour Tuna Casserole
>
> 2 7-ounce cans tuna
> ⅔ cup raisins
> 1 cup water
> ⅓ cup chopped celery
> ⅓ cup chopped sour pickles
> ½ cup peanut butter
> 2 tablespoons lemon juice
> ½ teaspoon salt
> 2 tablespoons butter
> ⅓ cup crushed gingersnaps

I tried. It did not transcend the sum of its parts, no matter how much the author insisted it would. That said, the recipe was reprinted about a decade later, so apparently it had its fans.

Currywurst is basically just a hot dog with ketchup, except that the ketchup is slightly spicy. It’s not at all unfamiliar to Americans.

I’d really like to try haggis one of these times. Except that I don’t think it’s particularly gross.

Double! I found the name vaguely offputting for the longest time. Fish tacos? Like, is the fish ground up like ground beef? That really doesn’t sound appetizing.

Until I was feeling adventurous on our last summer vacation and fell _madly_ in love with them. MADLY. I ended up eating them three times in a week and a half at three different restaurants. Each was different from the others and each was its own special brand of heaven. MmmmmMMMMMmmmmm, fish tacos …

And currywurst is its own special brand of awesome. I find ketchup repellent, but somehow I’ve had no issue with curry ketchup. Mind, I haven’t had it for a while now, but I do remember enjoying the experience.
