As for Joss Whedon, his latest series Dollhouse has a character sold to the Dollhouse by a rapist so he can rape her repeatedly. In between rapes another character is raping her as well. Another character is assigned to fall in love with a guy and is willing to debase herself completely to keep him around. The main character gets beat up a lot and ends up having sex with several men that she wouldn’t have voluntarily chosen if her mind was her own. Now personally I love the show but I can see why people are put off by things like this.
The new Star Trek movie is unusually harsh to women. Several are killed over the course of the movie.
