Leaving what, about thirty seconds out of each seven minute cartoon?

Well, you got the build-up to the joke, but they would skip the punchline.

Come to think of it I saw a Sylvester and Tweety that had been bowdlerized like that. It was especially egregious because Sylvester kept getting killed and as he was going through his nine lives he would arrive in hell in various ways – dropping through the ceiling, rolling up in a roller coaster car, etc. – with a number on his chest and sit on a bench with the predecessors. It was pretty incomprehensible until I saw it intact in one of the Golden Collection DVDs.

Yeah, that was one of my earliest scares. And that funeral coach? Man o man.

When I was a kid the Raymond Burr-inserted Godzilla ran on TV for the first time, and my mom didn’t want to let us watch it. We prevailed. And who had the nightmare???

But we liked to watch the scary shows/movies, because then we’d wheedle our mom with “But we have to stay up and watch whatever-innocuous-show to get the scary ‘out of our systems.’” It sometimes worked.

Ever see the bowdlerized version of _Robin Hood: Men in Tights?_ It’s not even _funny._

[The bolded part is edited out of the edited-for-TV version.]

Prince: That’s an interesting name, “Latrine”. How’d your family come about it?

Latrine: Changed in the 9th century.

Prince: You changed your name _to_ Latrine?

**Latrine: Yeah. Used to be “Shithouse.”**

Prince: It’s a good change. It’s a good change.

Not erotica and only one of the four stories can be considered misogynistic (the weakest story of the bunch). In the other three, the men are misogynistic, but end up paying a price for it, while the women end up getting the best of it.

There are several other – most of his best – where the woman get the better of an arrogant man. “Lamb to the Slaughter,” “Dip in the Pool,” “The Man from the South” (though she does pay a price), and “The Landlady” have a woman triumphing over male stupidity and mysonigystic behavior gets its comeuppance.

I never read his children’s books, but I’ve been a fan of his short stories years. I was surprised to hear he wrote children’s books after what I saw in them.

My experience was the reverse. I read Charlie And The Chocolate Factory and the rest as a kid. Then, I stumbled on a copy of his short story collection Kiss Kiss at a yard sale.

I believe they overdubbed the campfire beans scene with a bunch of horse whinnying. Yeah, that’s funny. 🙄

It kinda is, if you’re familiar with the original. Are all the edits horse related? That would be a hoot!

Most kids in my class had our introduction to that scene when it showed on TV. It was all anybody wanted to talk about the next day at school.
