The long-searched-for line appears in Blondie:

Can anyone provide a link to the thread where we discussed at great length whether someone had said in a movie or TV show or whatever the following?:

“But what does it do?”

“It doesn’t do anything. That’s the beauty of it.”

All the words that I’ve tried searching on are too short or too common. I can’t find the thread.

I have a vague recollection of the reply being said in a plummy English accent, in some black and white movie… but that is as clear as it gets. So, probably no help whatsoever!

**Earl Snake-Hips Tucker** [posted](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=413962) a clip last March which could well be the origin of the expression. It’s from the TV show Burke’s Law.
