I was thinking of Socrates when I typed that.

Really! I was!

Wow, there is a lot of agreement in three categories, but the Leaders are all over the board. Interesting.

As I’ve said earlier, at this level of influence the leaders really don’t impress me much; I don’t think any of the four we have left come close to the top 5 in the other 3 categories in the mark they’ve made on history.

Hey, we had to get up a half an hour before we went to bed and pick
gravel off the road with our tongues. And when we got home, our father would
murder us and dance on our graves.

You had a father _and_ a grave? We should all be so lucky.

I was rooting (silently) for Aristotle to get through the whole elimination round without drawing a single vote. Now I don’t think anyone will have that distinction (there was a Newton vote a while ago, and a handful of Gutenbergs this round and I think a couple in earlier rounds as well). I didn’t mention it earlier 'cause I figured someone would vote for him just to be contrary.

Aristotle was certainly very influential, but was it a _good_ influence? Many of his ideas were wrong.

Another famous influential thinker with incorrect ideas was Descartes. Christiaan Huygens (one of the more important scientist/inventors who did _not_ make Hart’s list) once wrote:
(as quoted in **The Best of All Possible Worlds: Mathematics and Destiny** By Ivar Ekeland (avail at Google Books): “… But having since discovered in [Descartes’ Principles] things which are patently wrong, and others which are extremely unlikely, I have reconsidered my previous position, and today, in all of his physics, or metaphysics, or meteors, I find almost nothing to which I can subscribe as being correct.”
Aristotle’s famous _Law of the Excluded Middle_ has sometimes been blamed for the less holistic cognition style of Occident compared with Orient, but this blame seems exaggerated. :dubious:
