The 2010 Olympic Winter Games Results Thread

I’m reminded of Torino in 2006. I believe the day Cindy Klassen won her fifth medal (the gold, IIRC) was the same day the Canadian hockey team lost to Russia, eliminating them from medal contention.

The Toronto Sun had a front page picture of Klassen, with the sub-headline “Can she play hockey? 'Cuz Canada can’t.”

I’m disappointed in the cross-country Team Canada’s decision to sit out Brian McKeever in tomorrow’s 50K race. They feel the other 4 athletes have a better chance to medal, which I suppose is fair, but I would trade that medal for seeing McKeever race; he’s legally blind and would be the first person to compete in both the Olympics and the Paralympics. It’s just so sad to see this wonderful story end this way. :frowning:

Kinda depressing too though, You know she will never be able to look at the medal or think about it without associating.

Canada really kicking it into overdrive in the last couple days here:

Yesterday:
SILVER for women’s curling (Cheryl Bernard’s rink, in a nailbiter that went to extra ends and just barely missing two shots that would have secured the win)
GOLD and BRONZE in men’s 500m short track (Charles Hamelin and Francois-Louis Tremblay in a sketchy finish that involved Apollo Ohno getting DQed)
GOLD in men’s 5000m short track relay (Hamelin and Tremblay again, along with Hamelin’s brother Francois and Olivier Jean in a terrific team performance)

Today:
GOLD in men’s 3000m long track team pursuit (Giroux, Makowsky and Morrison over the US by only 0.2s!)
GOLD in men’s parallel snowboarding slalom (Jasey-Jay Anderson, overcoming a .76s deficit going into the final run!)
BRONZE in men’s 4-man bobsled (Lyndon Rush and team, getting narrowly edged by an incredible run by the Germans by just 0.01s for the silver!)
GOLD in men’s curling (Kevin Martin and team just had an incredible tournament overall, going undefeated)
This clinches the most medals ever won by Canada in the Olympics, most gold medals every won by Canada in the Olympics, most gold medals won by a hosting country for the Winter Olympics, and ties most gold medals won by a country in the Winter Olympics. An incredible achievement for our country’s athletes, and a testament to their will and determination.

Now there lies just one more gold to get to make sure “Best Canadian Olympic Results Ever” doesn’t require an asterisk

Of course there are people who will bitch about Canadian performance, but I can tell you I will not be one of them.

At the bar watching the Canada/Slovakia game when the scroll showed that Canada had moved into third place in the overall medal count, well the cheer sent shivers down my spine.

A hearty congratulations and my heartfelt thanks to all Canadian athletes.

I’m having trouble watching this bronze medal hockey game. I want both teams to win. I’m guessing that’s not going to happen.
