The 2025 Papal Conclave

Who died 33 days after he was elected. I guess he was serious about not wanting to be Pope.

John Paul I

People wondered if he had been murdered. I read a book about that, and it convinced me that he was not. But pretty fishy.

How are voting results released to the Cardinals? Do they know how many votes each member got, or is it a simple “no one got 2/3 of the vote”?

I don’t know for sure, but based on a few viewings of The Shoes of the Fisherman, the results are read out to the cardinals after they are tallied. For example, “For Cardinal X, 46 votes. For Cardinal Y, 38 votes. For Cardinal Z, 29 votes. For Cardinals A, B, and C, ten votes each.” Then if nobody got the required number, “Insufficient for election” is stated, and the ballots are burned and the cardinals will vote again.

So the cardinals know just after the votes are counted.

It was done this ^^^ way in the movie Conclave, too. Then the ballots are burned-- hence the smoke.

And more black smoke this morning, apparently.

Here’s how they manage the smoke:

Twice already this morning I hear - next vote. 5.30pm local time

they announce the vote as they go. the cardinals can tally as they go or wait for the final tally announcement.

i would reckon that the votes tighten up each round.

The CNN live cams are showing no smoke yet, but a cute family of seagulls next to the smokestack.

White smoke!

We’ve got him folks! Don’t know who, but we have a Pope

Pope Jonathan Livingston Seagull?

Just sat down to check my chimney cam and sure enough it’s white!

Puppy went bonkers barking at the seagulls on TV. Then shortly after the white smoke. That predicts Pope Lucy I. Although when she misbehaves we call her Lucifer, so maybe Pope Lucifer I?

Wow, is it me or was that really fast?

This is a good place to be watching right now.

From Reuters:

When the conclave has elected a pope, he is asked if he accepts and which name he wishes to take.

The new pope dons white vestments that have been prepared in three sizes and sits on a throne in the Sistine Chapel to receive the other cardinals, who pay homage and pledge obedience.

A senior cardinal appears on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica and announces in Latin: “Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum. Habemus Papam” (“I announce to you great joy. We have a pope”).

So i guess they don’t announce the name until everyone has sworn obedience. How long does it usually take?

I wanted to see the latest news on the Papal conclave, so I just plugged “White Smoke” into google.

The first result was a Reddit thread with the text, “Most likely a blown headgasket, stop driving and check coolant.”

Good advice if you see white smoke.

abc news is saying 30-40 minutes. lots going on in the room of tears.

the swiss guard are in place.

Yesterday a women’s group set off pink smoke near the Vatican. That must’ve been a little confusing.
