"The 7 astronauts are in Hell." You can probably guess who said it.

Good question. Reminds me of September 12, 2001, when I saw nutjob Pat Robertson and – damnit, what’s that fat fuck’s name? Oh, right – Jerry Fallwell, who seemed to be at once condemning the terrorists and saying that the terrorists were doing God’s will.

Oh that line alone was worth it. Bewdiful.

Ah yes, this brings to mind one of the more satisfying experiences of my young life … One cold, rainy day in Irving, I was making my way along the 183 service road through the throngs of folks heading to the Billy Graham revival at Texas Stadium. What did I see by the side of the road but a gaggle of Westboro fucknuts standing in the rain waving anti-Graham signs. (He’s pro-gay, you see, because he says that God actually loves homosexuals and wants them to repent their ‘sin’. Whatever.)

I couldn’t resist. As traffic started moving again, I held my place in front of their chosen protest point for a moment to get some space. Then I revved my engine, jammed the gearshift into first, and peeled out, swooping toward and then away from them through a very large puddle that had formed a few feet away. SPLOOSH.

Incredibly juvenile, I know. But it sure made my day.

Dude, exactly.

The guy is NUTS. I read the story on Godhatesfundies.org about what it was like for the Phelps kids. He was ALWAYS that bad. Only before it wasn’t about gays, it was about how he had to control his family.

The man is seriously demented. I don’t even take anything he says seriously anymore-I’m not offended by him, in the way that I am by Jack Chick, because Phelps is a madman. He’s delusional, he’s sick, he’s a fucking loon.

He beat his entire family into submission-some were able to get away, but the ones who stayed obviously are beaten. They’re broken.

Anymore, I just shake my head and think, “My god, what a nightmare this man’s house must be.”

I know the feeling.

As I’ve mentioned in other threads I am a resident of Topeka, Kansas, where Fred lives. We see him all the time. He’s not only a loony, his followers are dangerous loonies, who have, more than once physically attacked people.(The pastor of my former church, for starters) Of course they talk about being attacked themselves, and having their property vandalized, but I wouldn’t be suprised if they did it all themselves on the sly.

Let me tell you about what happened just this latest Christmas Day. I arrived at church and saw that a crowd of Phelp’s were across the street.(I attend Grace Episcopal Cathedral here in Topeka) I could have gone it a side door and avoided them id’ing me, but I figured “Damn, these folks are not going to stop me from going in the front door of my own church.” So I walked down the sidewalk(they were across from me) and as soon as I got opposite them I was recognized.(I’ve done a lot of counterpicketing against them) The bells of our church were playing “Angels We Have Heard on High”, so the guy leading the WBC contingent started singing, along with the “Gloria” chorus from the hymn, loud enough for me to hear. Only he wasn’t singing Gloria, he was repeating over and over the words “church whore”

As matt_mcl could tell you, better than I, they have not neglected to picket in Canada. IU’d been avoiding the WBC site because I KNEW the kind of crap this tragedy would bring from them, but when I saw the thread title I had to open it.

I can’t remember the last time a post made me laugh quite sp loudly as this one did…

I don’t believe for one minute that Phelps is saying this out of any supernatural insight, but whatever entity he is describing, it isn’t God and it doesn’t deserve any respect.

So not only are they tasteless, their improvised lyrics don’t scan. That guy would have been better served saying “church whores we have heard on high” or something, and simply saying “faaaaaaaaaaaaaaggot” for the gloria part. Much more insulting and it scans.

Oh, and I’d like to personally thank Baldwin for this remark:

“damnit, what’s that fat fuck’s name?”

It was completely appropriate.

Not.

well, thats my Porn name picked.

John Godsarm.

Heh, after a fashion. Having skipped Toronto Pride the day before, he announced a date to protest the M. vs. H. (common-law spouses) decision. We organized a great big counterprotest. He didn’t show  Looks like he’s scared by a bunch of angry fags & dykes.

He showed up the next day to burn a flag on the steps of the Supreme Court. A Mountie turned up to help him light it properly, “so you don’t burn yourself and make us spend our public funds treating you.”

The next day he got into a fistfight in Montreal in front of Mary Queen of the World Cathedral.

A good trip by all accounts!

Is there anybody in Phelps’ heaven?

Over the time I have hung around this board I have seen Phelps’ name bandied around a few times (only in the Pit IIRC), but have never had time/felt inclined until today to check out his agenda. So I visited a couple of sites after reading his pustulence in the OP.

Oh dear. I really wish I hadn’t. That guy (and the agenda of the WBC) are just fucking insane.

We’ve got a Fundie Fred (Niles) here in Australia who spews the same line but thankfully without the same degree of utter disgustingness. We laugh at our Fred. I’d be shit-scared of your Fred though.

Before anyone takes offense at my “a much worse insult” comment, let me specify that to those who go to WBC, it is most probably a worse thing to be called a faggot than to be called a church whore. I doubt Baker would be insulted if someone were to suggest (in a non-offensive way, as in “Hey Baker, you don’t happen to be gay, do you?”) she were gay.

Oh, geez. I forgot about that. It was such a non-event. Canadians also don’t invest nearly as much emotionally in our flag as our southerly neighbours, so IIRC his display was mostly met with bemusement. On-lookers mostly paused briefly to muse “hmm… wonder what’s going on over there?..” and then wander off again. The sight of someone setting our flag ablaze doesn’t provoke a visceral response as it would in the U.S. We might politley say “oh look, what a shame” and then move on. It barely got any news time except for the papers that said that could only report that a small handful of onlookers were vaguely paying attention.

In Toronto, such as display would probably be met with “Hmm, I wonder if their filming a TV show or something…”

I didn’t read all of what everyone had to say in this thread, but as soon as I saw the name Phelps I was instantly interested.

Back about two months ago he came to the UND campus in Grand Forks, ND to tell us all what evil people we are b/c we have gay people here. I happened to be at the protest connected to his appearance (I was on the pro-gay side)

Anyway, there was one of his cronies STANDING ON THE AMERICAN FLAG…in fact, someone close to me took a picture

This pissed me off to know end, this guy is evil and rest assured he will spending a good amount of time with his good buddy Satan.

Anyone getting the idea that Phelps, seeing people gradually saying “yeah, whatever” to his slogans, is trying to come up with increasingly “offensive” signs?

“God hates fags” … yeah, whatever, go away (after a while)

What? They’re not reacting to that one anymore? “God hates America!” Er, sure, Fred…

“God hates Everyone But Westboro Baptist Church”

Dear Fred, please get help.

“God Wants YOU for the Devil’s Army. Enlist today and shoot commie fags and fag-enablers who aren’t already burning in hell!”

“GOD HATES YOU! GODDAMNIT, REACT TO ME! I WANT TO BE CONTROVERSIAL AGAIN!” ::Fred collapses::

Talk about a rebel without a clue.

Just to stir things up a bit, I agree that the guy is aloonie tune, and his rants are truly offensive in every way. But in the sense that he’s just trying to score some publicity for himself (and succeeding, it would seem) how is what he’s done so much worse than the overexposure we’re all being subjected to on the news right now?

In one sense, he’s better than channel kwkw’s coverage of the tangential local link to one of the astronauts, because they’re cheapening the tragedy to make a buck, while he at least has an actual point that he (if no one else) believes in.

He’s just being more up front about it.

It’s more like watching a train wreck.

The guy is crazy. He isn’t right in the head, soooo…

I do believe though, that most of Topeka has seen his kids do things they shouldn’t. Aren’t there rumors going around that his eldest daughter’s “adopted” son is actually her real son, but because she’s not married, they pass him off as adopted?

Or rumors about his family having affairs and stuff?

I also heard that Fred Jr. was picketing the Treasures of the Tsars exhibit. Why on EARTH would he do that? What did poor Nicky do to him?
