I’m being pedantic (and a few months late), but it is NOT a chain gun. A chain gun has a single barrel.
The Hughes M230 and the M242 Bushmaster are chain guns. They are single-barrelled, unlike the multi-barrel rotary canon used in A-10s. One design advantage of the chain gun is that it is relatively easy to change the rate of fire. The AH-64 Apache and the M2 Bradley use chain guns. Could you have been hearing these instead?

Nah, it was them, we could see them circling around their range. I just always erroneously called it that.
LOL!!!
Congresswoman McSally is now running for the Senate in Arizona and wears an A-10 pin in her campaign website portrait, as well as being shown flying an A-10 in an ad: https://support.mcsallyforsenate.com/
My ex-girlfriend’s dad let me fly in an A-10 simulator at his military base. She’s the only girlfriend I cried when we broke up. And it wasn’t about the girl.
How was the simulator?
It was really cool. A fully decked out cockpit was under a projected dome in a fairly large room. This was in the early 90s and I remember thinking the 3d rendered graphics weren’t quite up to par with what you’d see in a state of the art video game, but video games weren’t being projected on a huge domed screen! I got to do some basic flying with the area I lived in loaded up for familiarity. No combat or anything. It was definitely one of the more memorable dates I ever went on.
I’m envious. I would’ve wanted to fire the big gun or launch some missiles, though!
Yes, blow up city hall.
I just finished Tom Clancy’s 1986 technothriller Red Storm Rising, about a non-nuclear WWIII between NATO and the Warsaw Pact. A-10s take a fearsome toll on Soviet armor in Western Europe, and are called “the Devil’s cross” by enemy tank crews for their unwelcome appearance overhead: http://www.elec-intro.com/EX/05-14-19/A_10_Warthog_002.jpg

Which is the main armament?

At the risk of allowing this thread to devolve into A-10 porn (I’m looking at you, Elendil), these photos from an overseas training exercise are intended to show how “austere” runways–love that lingo!–can be used with the jet.
In tragic news, there was a crash this weekend at Holloman Air Force Base, at which the Air Force is testing two light attack aircraft that could be a kinda/sorta replacement to the ground attack role that the A-10 plays. One of the crew was killed, one injured.
Guilty as charged.

Love all the pictures.
I did not realize the spoilers were that big.
Two A-10s are flying over the city as part of an air show as I write this!
Congresswoman Martha McSally, mentioned upthread as an A-10 pilot and longtime advocate for the plane in the House, this week won the GOP primary for a U.S. Senate seat in Arizona.
