The Andrew Yang Presidential Campaign thread

A lot happening in the Yang Gang this week. On the day of the last qualifying poll, everyone was eagerly awaiting the results. There were a bunch of rumors that the Monmouth poll would qualify Yang. They turned out not to be true. A bunch of people were really mad. The day before, Yang had put out a video where he was asked about his dad joke. He told a story about how he told his sons that when they were upset, they could say the magic words, “Whatever, it’s cool!” and everything would be better. So people were quoting that everywhere.

But within hours, the Quinnipiac poll qualified Yang, and everyone forgot about how mad they were.

Yang himself found out that he qualified while he was in the middle of an interview. His campaign manager, Zach held up a piece of paper saying "4%! We’re in! " on the other side of a glass enclosure where Yang was interviewing with the Des Moines Register. When the interviewer asked about whether he will qualify, he calmly said that he just did.

There was a lot of press about Yang qualifying for the December debate since that made him one of 7 candidates making the debate.

Christopher Hale (Hale is a Democratic politician from Tennessee; he has been a Catholic nonprofit executive and helped lead faith outreach for President Barack Obama. from Time.com) tweeted this:

Saagar Enjeti did a piece on The Hill, Saagar Enjeti: Yang qualifies for debate, changes politics forever, basically saying that the way Yang made it to the debate without much media coverage changed the way politics is done.

Yang released his health care plan. A medical student seemed pleased. A doctor liked parts of it but thought other parts weren’t so clear. Some people felt that the insurance part needed more clarity.

The SEIU (labor union) put out a statement explaining parts of Yang’s health care plan.

538 put out a piece about the composition of the Yang Gang. It concluded, by looking at donor numbers from Q2 and Q3 that the Yang Gang is comprised of young males. Whoopi on The View commented on that. But I don’t think it’s true as to the male part. I’d believe it if it was in Q2 and the first part of Q3, but since then, the gap has started to ease a bit. The latest qualifying poll has males and females as equal. As for the young part, there’s a bit of progress there, but it’s still mostly true. There are a lot of reasons for that, but one is that older people often get their news from outlets like MSNBC where Yang is blacked out. The campaign is trying to get around that through ads and other avenues.

Two days before the debate, PBS put out an ad for the debate. The tweet read “The stage is set: 7 presidential contenders will take your questions in the last Democratic Debate of 2019. Watch the @NewsHour/@POLITICO Democratic Debate on Thursday at 8/7c.” But Yang was not in the video. After a lot of complaints, PBS apologized and put up a new video with Yang included.

In the meantime, an Emerson poll was released with Yang at 6%. In that poll, 38% of Yang supporters had not voted before. And again, the gap between men and women is closing.

I really like this video of a Next Big Idea podcast that Yang did. The interviewer was for UBI and brought up some of the secondary benefits and while he asked some of the same standard questions, he seemed to know that the questions were already answered.

According to an Iowa journalist, Douglas W. Burns,

Yang made a holiday appearance on The Ellen show. When Ellen announced that her audience would be on for 12 days of Christmas next year, Yang seemed to enjoy the crowd’s reaction.

Colbert did a piece on the whipped cream incident. Zach, Yang’s campaign manager and wearing a big down coat, pulled Yang away from continuing. Colbert called Zach a staffer and made it seem like this was the responsible thing to do. He called Zach ‘Big Coat Guy 2020.’

For the rest of the week, the Yang Gang called Zach ‘Big Coat Guy’.

Ellen DeGeneres took credit for the whipped cream incident, saying that Yang was copying her. Yang was on her show and announced that she was giving away cans of whipped cream to the audience.

The 6th Democratic debate is on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2019.

On the day of the debate, Donald Glover is holding a pop-up event fundraiser (love that logo) for Andrew Yang. Childish Gambino Announces Andrew Yang Fundraiser

Counterpoint: Fuck Yang.

Okay I am just starting to read about the guy. He is the only Dem that I have heard that is talking about automation properly - I say that as a guy that is currently automating about 1000 people’s worth of work this quarter to keep up with China.

I don’t know much about him still but I would say that he could definitely dark horse this thing. The two Dems I prefer at this point is Buttigeg (if I spelled that right) and Yang at this point.

It’d be cool to have a republican primary at this point too to check them out, but Trump is their guy I guess, so I’m not voting that way.

Stamos! Why is that? I am really interested in why. I don’t know much about Yang other than he is trying to look at automation head on, instead of the magic “new jobs will come” which really means “new McJobs will come, until they get their robots going”.

Sick of snakes on a plane internet cults who scream and harass people online that their candidate who is having trouble getting 3% in most polls is somehow not getting the respect they feel he is entitled to.

I’m fine with being part of a movement, not an irrational cult. If I wanted that, I’d just become a Trumpeter.

Dear Ear: Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated. Thread shitting is counterproductive, you (should) know.

There seemed to be an almost deliberate marginalization of Yang at the last debate.

He is incredibly successful for what amounts to a word of mouth candidate.

What is your definition of successful? Is it being able to draw mobs of people swarming on anyone who says anything negative about him on Twitter? Or being able to poll at more than 3%?

I actually like some of his ideas. I’ve been a proponent of basic income for a long time now and feel it is something that even conservatives could get behind.

If he doubled his polling support he’d still just be at 6%. It’s difficult to look at that and think, well there’s our next president.

Yang says he would pardon Individual 1

Yeah I got swarmed for criticizing him. I had to start blocking people because my Notifications were becoming overwhelmed.

Correction. Mike Memoli says Andrew Yang said something Why should we trust Mike Memoli? Never heard of him before.

I like that Yang is not a politician. I don’t see how he can win in 2020 but maybe he can win in 2024 if Trump wins again.

Actor/comedian/Dr. Ken Jeong endorsed Yang

Yang is my guy. Unfortunately, he has no viable path to the nomination. If the Democratic electorate were mostly just made up of left-libertarian stoners and STEM geeks he would easily win… But it isn’t, & he won’t.

Still, he will get my completely useless primary vote in a couple months.

After the debate, there was a flurry of positive media attention.
4 takeaways from Axios:
“4. Yang stands out on winnowed debate stage”
Chris Cillizza from CNN:
“Andrew Yang will benefit from this debate. He comes across as BY FAR the most genuine (and normal) candidate on the stage.”
Dan Diamond from Politico:
"How many new Twitter followers each candidate’s campaign account gained during tonight’s #DemDebate

· @AndrewYang +4767"

This was a great post-debate interview with CNN. Almost all of the people on the panel had a great interview with Yang in the past. The part about how Yang got together with Donald Glover was great. It was nice to hear that they both have the same visions for the country. [Donald Glover question is a minute and a half from the end]

Since the debate, Yang’s book The War on Normal People has been sold out on Amazon and most bookstores people have been reporting across the country. Several people got the book as Christmas gifts. Even the South Korean Prime Minister is reading Yang’s book.

Arianna Huffington tweeted out from the debate:

This, to me, is the crux of Yang’s campaign.

This was a sweet article about the friendship between Cory Booker and Yang. ‘Genuinely friends’: How Cory Booker and Andrew Yang bonded in competition

Since Donald Glover (Childish Gambino) joined Yang’s creative team right before the last debate, several actors/comedians have jumped aboard the Yang train.

Joe Wong has been onboard for a while:

A Yang Ganger: Holy Crap - Joe Wong is #YangGang . Can you give imagine a comedy fundraiser with : Joe Wong, Dave Chapelle, Ronnie Chieng? That’s an Allstar lineup
Joe Wong: Dude, I bet I became a member of the #YangGang way before you did:)

There was a slew of people with verified twitter accounts that had either actor, writer or creative arts in their profile that jumped onboard after the last debate.

Yang was also endorsed by a South Carolina Mayor:

Andrew Yang Overtakes Pete Buttigieg to Become Fourth Most Favored Primary Candidate: Poll (Newsweek)

Warren Uses the Force, Klobuchar Beats a Dead Horse and Buttigieg Needs to Change Course: 2020 Presidential Black Power Rankings, Week 21 (The Root) places Yang at #2 in the power rankings. Oddly, this author has been smearing Yang at MSNBC for weeks. Yet he wrote:

Cheers! Undecided Iowa Caucus group most wants to have a beer with @AndrewYang. @WHOhd

Every person in the undecided focus group for the Iowa Caucus had Yang on their list for who they wanted to have a beer with:

The video with their interest about why they want to have a beer with Yang is really great too.

Yang’s response:

A quick and anecdotal look at the Yang coalition. I’m always stuck by how many people in the Yang Gang have not voted before. In this video in LA in the line outside of the Donald Glover pop-up event, someone chose people from the line that went around the block to ask why they’re Andrew Yang fans. The majority of them said that they hadn’t participated in politics before or hadn’t voted before.

Also, a report of the changing demographics of the 2020 electorate show that Hispanics will overtake Blacks and is projected to be the largest minority group in the electorate. This is to Yang’s favor since according to polling, Yang does well with Hispanics and Asians who have also doubled in size in the electorate for 2020.

Yang and the campaign team decided the end the MSNBC blackout without getting an apology, going on All In with Chris Hayes.

On a leaked memo to the DNC, The Daily Beast reports that Yang asked the DNC to run more polls in the early states since those are required for qualification and none have been done since November 2019. Not to Yang, but through a publication, the DNC refused, saying that resources would be better used elsewhere. Yang offered to pay for the polls. Both Cory Booker and Tom Steyerbacked up Yang. The hashtag #pollthepeople was trending after the DNC response. In the leaked memo, it says that Yang had nearly 400K donors and expects to bring in $12.5M for Q4. Zach Graumann tweeted that they just passed their 1M donation transaction total. #PollThePeople Trends as DNC Rejects Andrew Yang Request for More Polls Ahead of Iowa Debate

Umm, your lengthy post kinda gives credence to the idea that Yang has nothing but a cult.

And yeah, I’ve seen plenty of stuff on Twitter about YangGang whining about no polls. Guess they forgot about those pesky holidays that showed up out of nowhere.

‘YangGang’. That doesn’t sound right.

I can understand the comedians lining up behind him. He is a joke candidate, after all.

Actually I think Biden is a joke candidate , almost his whole adult life has been spent in DC.

It’s good to have experience but it’s also good to have someone who worked a non political job as an adult.

It’s not just that. It’s the fact that he sucks at talking. Every time he opens his mouth he makes me cast doubt upon his claim of being a teetotaler. Yeah, I know he struggled with a stutter. That’s no excuse. Last time I checked, a stutter doesn’t cause people to say “I got hairy legs, that turn blonde in the sun, the little kids liked to reach into the pool and rub my legs down.” Biden is a dottering fool and a horrible candidate.

He is definitely a joke compared to Yang. But I think it’s true that Yang has no viable path forward this time around. I think he does have a chance in the future, depending on how much he can build up his pop culture brand, which he’s already done well at in the past year. If Yang essentially continues his campaign even after this election is over - becoming a top tier “influencer” and getting his name, message, jokes, and memes out there as much as humanly possible - I think he does have a serious shot.
