Which, per your source, was only the policy beginning in 2011, so again this isn’t new. Trump is just doing the same stuff previous administrations have done and selling it as the Bigliest Deportation Ever because the rubes don’t know any better.
FWIW, the school districts in my area have announced that ICE will not be allowed on their campi unless they have a warrant signed by a judge and naming a specific individual, and that any unauthorized ICE presence will result in a full-campus lockdown along active shooter protocols.
I am severely disappointed in the entire military crews of the planes actually carrying out these flights. Is it really all that important to them to get flight time?
That’s not an idea I’ve ever pushed. I’m simply pointing out that Trump’s “biggest mass deportation in history” is all PR and no substance intended to impress the marks, just like everything else he does, and he isn’t doing anything new.
These are legal orders issued by the office of the Secretary of Defense (presumably) at the behest of executive policy as defined by the President. Air crews and other airmen and officers don’t really have an option to disobey direct orders without suffering administrative and legal consequences for insubordination.
The irony here is that the Air Force C-17 manifest has been racked up for years because of maintenance issues and retirement of the C-5, and even high priority programs typically have to schedule flights for many months in advance. By taking these planes out of rotation and using them as airliners—at enormous taxpayer expense because a flight hour of a C-17 is many times what a normal commercial airliner would cost—they are actually disrupting national security operations and potentially making the country less secure.
I’m not convinced those are legal orders. The flights are originating in the United States. That’s using the military for domestic law enforcement, IMHO.
I’m also not convinced the current administration cares a whit about the law, either.
Nope. But, re the military, it would be nice if they didn’t all fall into step with being usef for domestic law enforcement. And, re the current administration, they’ve proven very well they, and especially Trump, don’t care at all about legalities.
When Trump gets to killing immigrants, he won’t waste aviation fuel on them, or even words. They will die in tent cities—concentration camps—in the middle of fucking nowhere from neglect, disease, and starvation. While statistics may be hard to come by because along with it there won’t be much record keeping, the general phenomenon will hardly be a secret. Because most Americans won’t care. Simple as that.
You keep mistaking “hoping” for “disappointed”, over and over again, and this is no fucking fantasy-this a horrifying nightmare. If even a fraction of what we fear comes true, we don’t win-we lose. If there is any glee to be found in this situation, it sure as hell isn’t being found on the left. I have asked you over and over again what you personally have to lose if this country takes a hard turn right, and an actual answer sure would be nice.
What’s the flying fuck is your stake in this game only you seem to be playing?
Assuming the deportees in question have received the minimal due process of adjudication via an immigration court, removal is not technically a “domestic law enforcement” action. These are people who are not legally permitted to remain in the United States, and it is within the authority of the Commander in Chief (or the Secretary of Defense) to use military resources to remove them. I believe in this case that they were detained by federal agents of domestic law enforcement agencies (ICE, CBP, US Marshals Service) and transported to a military airfield to be loaded onto planes.
The legality of deporting undocumented immigrants to a nation other than that of origin is another issue; I don’t know if all of the people deported in flights to Guatemala were actually from that country, and of course Guatemala can’t accept millions of immigrants, nor are their enough C-17s and C-130s available to move these hypothetical millions of people, so it’s really just performative showboating but its lets Trump pander to his base about how much he is doing to get rid of all the “rapists and murderers” even if is totally counterproductive and just intended to create fear and harm.
Can you two just get a room and bicker in private like normal lovebirds?
