Romney’s successor doesn’t seem to be in the “let’s give Trump everything he wants” camp.
Where not in the “let’s give Trump everything he wants” camp only brings this to his mind,
“A lot of people ask me when I say I’m sometimes going to have my differences with the president … And I’ll just tell you from my previous service with him at the same time, it’s spending,” Curtis said. “We have to do far more to rein in our spending. And that is a big deal in Utah. That’s what my constituents expect me to do.”
But I’m sure he’s gonna not spend our money wisely.
In the news today:
Trump wants to buy Greenland, again
Trump threatens to take control of the Panama Canal
I don’t trust him to spend our money wisely, either.
Also, he wants to rename Denali back to Mount McKinley. He floated this idea during his first term, but gave it up after canvassing Alaska’s congressional delegation, and being persuaded not to. I don’t think he’s planning on listening to anybody this time.
Buckle up, it’s going to be a bumpy four years.
The OP almost sounds like he or she detests Trump, but couldn’t manage to vote for Harris because she didn’t check all the right boxes, or to protest Gaza or something. So they’re trying to justify the passive role they played in bringing Trump back to power.
Where the fuck do you get that! Trump is vile and represents the greatest threat that our country has seen since 1865. ! I liked Harris, and proudly voted straight Dem in 2024 , as I have the past 28 years. (I skipped the 1994 election because I was young and lazy but after seeing the results vowed never to do so again).
Read the damn OP and my subsequent posts! I am not even arguing that Trump won’t be a dictator that can do whatever he wants. What I am arguing is that it is a dead end as far as a debate topic because if he is a dictator then there is no point in discussing strategy or possible outcomes because the answer will always be we are doomed and there is nothing we can do.
I guess you would prefer a forum with nothing but pages and pages of arguments over whether Trump will be a dictator, but I prefer one where we can discuss what could or might happen on the off chance that the world doesn’t end.
nm. Will repost to include quote.
Sorry if I misunderstood you. Still, I have seen similar arguments, from all political sides, to the effect that Trump won’t be so bad and we all need to dial back the angst. I’ve heard it from Republicans, Democrats, people who float around in the nebulous space of libertarianism, and even far left progressives.
It is true that Trump 2.0 probably won’t be so bad… right away. It’ll take time for all of this to happen, years even. That’s how it played out the first time. For instance, the SCOTUS didn’t rule on Dobbs until nearly 18 months after Trump left office. (Believe it or not, there are actually people out there who consider Dobbs just one more way things have gone worse under Biden. (You’ll need to scroll down a bit.)
And Canada’s going to be the 51st state.
Because “Lebensraum”?
(Seriously, how long has it been since a president openly talked about expanding the territory of the US?)
Couldn’t disagree more. He’s already setting up his cabinet of boot lickers. He’s already making changes. And he isn’t even in office.
Is he? His threat last week to go after any Republican congressperson who didn’t vote to abolish the debt limit resulted in all but 38 Republican representatives and 10 senators voting to fund the government without abolishing the debt limit. The nomination of Gaetz as AG didn’t even last a Scaramucci. He seems to have completely given up on his demand that he be allowed to make recess appointments.
It’s quickly becoming clear that he’s not as intimidating as he once was, and he’s looking a lot weaker and less in control of the situation. This isn’t a president who’s going to be able to issue dictatorial edicts and have the other branches of government just go along with it.
And, once again, a thread that’s complaining about the repetitive circular argument becomes the circular argument itself.
Neither was Hindenburg.
Which is to say, fill your administration with the right people, and it doesn’t so much matter if the President is a fascist (although, to be clear, Trump is) or good at governing according to the fascist agenda just so long as someone in power is.
I thought this was just hyperbole, but it isn’t.
Not that I think it would actually be possible, but I’m astonished he’s even thinking of it.
But we sure did give the Democratic establishment their comeuppance about Gaza and grocery prices, didn’t we! So glad we kept our priorities straight.
From the linked report by @Spectre_of_Pithecanthropus :
(Quoting Trump:)
‘Merry Christmas to all, including to the wonderful soldiers of China, who are lovingly, but illegally, operating the Panama Canal (where we lost 38,000 people in its building 110 years ago),’
Who is the “we” of those who died, Kimosabe?
The Panama Canal was one of the deadliest construction projects in world history, leading to the deaths of ~25,000-30,000 people in the process. A vast majority of the deaths came from the French where historians believe between ~20,000-25,000 died. Official US records show over 5,600 workers killed in their portion of the construction project.
Have any MAGAt congresspersons come out in support of his idiotic expansionist fantasies?
The “good” Congress people are apparently the ones that don’t actively try to stop the nonsense, taking their cue from “good” cops.
Going back to this early in the thread as I read back:
Not so much of Trump qua Trump, the man, but as the face of and instrument for establishing the ideology they lean towards anyway. The fig leaf will be that their reading of the constitution leads to these and those policy actions being righteous and good and constitutionally fine and dandy, and to that the man putting them in effect must not be prevented from doing so (which is what then shields him from consequences) except through the purely political, not judicial, process.
Like proper cowards and bootlickers, they’re staying silent because there’s no reason for them to say anything right now, positive or negative.
Right now, all this is just Trump talking. If he’s not serious, they won’t ever need to say anything; he’ll eventually move on to some new “joke”. If he is serious, maybe he’s just talking about “negotiating” with Canada, Greenland and Panama. In that case, it will be CG&P who push back on his nonsense, so again, no need for them to say anything. But maybe he’s talking about actual wars of annexation. Well, again, CG&P will push back on that, at least a first, and it’s only then that they might need to start saying something. If he wins easily, of course they’ll immediately say they supported him all along. If he loses, they’ll praise his efforts, and blame those woke CG&Pberanians for being too stupid to see the genius of his plan. If it’s somewhere in the “quagmire” zone, then and only that will they have to actually think for themselves. Guaranteed, they put that off for as long as possible!
You know what country would be easy to annex? Cuba. It’s sitting right there, and look how small it is on the map.
