The oldeest one of all: “Obey, or die.”
Martial law is justified when civilian authority has ceased to function, is completely absent, or has become ineffective.
And guess what the Supreme Court ruled just last month? THAT THE ADMIN HAS NOT DEMONSTRATED THAT SUCH A SITUATION EXISTS and therefore cannot use the military to enforce the law.
That ruling was on a different although related question, and pertained to the specific situation at that time and place, and even so was a mixed ruling with three dissenters. This says nothing about the circumstances that might arise in 2028, nor does it say anything about Trump just ignoring the Supreme Court.
Again, I don’t think this will happen, but then, I never thought the Orange Moron could possibly be re-elected, or that his regime could possibly get this crazy and lawless.
Why? I think something like that is almost guaranteed to happen, considering what happened 5 years ago today. If Trump is alive and relatively healthy; i.e. awake and breathing, I don’t see him leaving the White House on his own.
I’m assuming that even though Trump is surrounded by incompetent sycophants, that even they have a few working brain cells and would anticipate the national chaos and potential widespread violence that such a move would cause.
Seriously, do you read the posts you’re responding to?
I said our main focus should be on electing Democrats to Congress so we can impeach Trump.
Armed uprising is what I said we’ll do if Trump does something like cancel elections and declares himself dictator.
What happened five years ago was the best plan Trump & co. could think up to get around an election and it was a spectacular failure. I’m not sure why anyone thinks they’d do better at it with a Trump that’s eight years older, much less popular, and with a far less competent breed of sycophants surrounding him.
That’s a big if, since he’s barely any of those things NOW.
You assume they’d consider that a bad thing, rather than the ideal conditions for creating the dictatorship they want. And killing huge numbers of the people they don’t like in the process.
In 2020, Trump shuffled off to Buffalo once his evil shenanigans failed. If he has any evil shenanigans planned for 2028, I’d assume the same outcome—assuming his Dr. Evil plans are unsuccessful.
Wut? He got elected after the 2020 attempted coup and has since dismantled the federal government. Are you under the impression he retreated from public life?
That might be Trumps worst prison. Melania would kick his ass.
Nope. Just think 2020 was at least a little instructive. The GOP state officials did NOT fall in line—quite the opposite. And after the coup failed Trump clearly had no stomach for any sort of “you’ll have to drag me outta here!” drama.
Mind you, I wouldn’t put anything past these assholes. But I’m less troubled that his band of incompetents will figure out the secret sauce this time. And I don’t think every Republican outside of his inner circle will risk prison, etc., to advance a demented lame duck’s fantasies.
That’s just adorably naive.
We already saw the Trump administration’s best attempt to fuck with an election.
- Trump proposes suspending the election in June 2020 - is ignored by all 50 states
- Slowed down mail delivery to try to stop mail-in voting and demanded it be banned - tens of millions voted by mail anyway and no state abolished it
- Asks the governor and SecState of GA to “find” 10,000 more votes - they both tell him no
- Tried to appoint alternate states of electors - no state agreed to certify them
- Sued in multiple states to override the result - Supreme Court ruled unanimously against him
- Told the VP to discard EVs from certain states - Pence refused
- Had MAGA Congressmen object to those states’ votes - only a few in each house voted against certifying
- When all that failed, whipped up an angry mob to attack Congress - the Capitol Police eventually repelled them and no congressmen were hurt
The idea that this time Trump is just going to shout “We’re not doing elections anymore” and every Republican in every branch of government at every level will just say “Yes, sir!” flies in the face of observable history.
There was not a huge amount of fentanyl flowing across the border from Canada, and therefore no state of emergency existed for Trump to impose tariffs. But he did it anyway, the tariffs are currently in place and Canada’s export industries are suffering.
But I guess that is actually not happening, because there was no fentanyl emergency.
Right.
Uh-huh.
So what form of national emergency allows the president to order states not to hold elections and extend the terms of all incumbents indefinitely, and why didn’t Trump invoke it in 2020, when the US actually WAS facing the largest national emergency since World War II?
He didn’t think he had to. He thought he had the votes to “send it back to the states” and delay until it was too late.
He doesn’t care about “all incumbents.” Just himself and people he appoints as ministers of each department.
He had something to lose then. He had less internal support. Now, he has a fully compliant Congress (Duma), a private police protection brownshirt force (ICE), and plenty of dumb-ass yes men and women who tell him he can do anything he wants. (Kegsbreath, Kennedy, etc.)
What emergency? The example of Canadian fentanyl above tells us it could be any outrageous lie. Whatever. Does not matter.
Invasion of Martians.
Killer bees.
Socialists climbing up his legs.
It doesn’t matter - what matters is: Will enough people obey him? If he thinks “yes”, and he thinks “I could make money off this”, then he’ll go ahead and try.
Then why didn’t he invoke it after January 6th?
So he’s gonna be president-for-life with a House composed of 85% Democrats?
what house?
